- About the Unit?
Dr. Erika Claud’s laboratory focuses on microbiome research as it pertains to the development of the immature preterm infant intestine. This includes investigation into the development of microbial colonization, impact of probiotics, influence of human milk feeding, role of intestinal immaturity, and susceptibility to preterm infant morbidities.
- Job Information?
This position will participate, contribute and support in all aspects of the implementation and analysis of research projects focused on the study of the microbiome, intestinal development and the preterm infant development. Under limited direction, performs complex lab and/or research-related duties and tasks. Helps develop, design and conduct research projects according to plan, including planning new procedures, adapting existing procedures to the needs of the project, and making contributions to methodology. Collects, records and analyzes data. Conducts literature reviews. Participates in writing reports and manuscripts. Oversees the management of equipment and supplies. Ensures compliance with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives, and mandates. Responsibilities may include the following non-laboratory duties: transcribing and coding data; developing data collection instruments; presenting research findings at staff meetings, seminars, and scientific conferences; and assisting with building databases. Responsibilities may include the following laboratory duties: recognizing abnormal results and varying conditions or procedures to correct problems; setting up and performing experiments. The chosen individual may help train and supervise other research staff in the lab.
- Process and aliquot samples for microbiome analysis.
- Perform basic microbiome bioinformatic analysis. Record and analyze data.
- Prepare microbial culture.
- Perform molecular biology techniques including setting-up experiments.
- Handle animals used for experiments.
- Perform PCR.
- Conduct literature reviews.
- Participate in writing reports and manuscripts.
- Oversee the management of equipment and supplies.
- May present research findings at staff meetings, seminars, and scientific conferences.
- Assist with building databases; and recruiting and scheduling research subjects.
- May help train and supervise other research staff in the lab.
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills required.
- Ability to interact and communicate with clarity, tact, and courtesy with faculty, staff, students and others required.
- Strong organizational skills required.
- Strong communication skills (verbal and written) required.
- Ability to read and understand complex documents required.

- Additional Requirements??
Education, Experience, or Certifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a field relevant to the research being conducted required.
- Advanced degree in a field relevant to the research being conducted preferred.
- A minimum of one year of relevant research experience required.
Technical Knowledge or Skills:
- Ability to process and aliquot microbiome samples along with necessary data entry required.
- Basic Microbiome bioinformatic analysis skills preferred.
- Microbial culture skills preferred.
- PCR preferred.
