About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is an employee-owned company of environmental professionals who specialize in natural and culturalresource management, environmental planning, and regulatory compliance.

We are seeking an environmental specialist with wetland delineation experience to support our Chicago, Illinois office with projects across the central and eastern United States. The successful applicant will support and carry out a variety of natural resources studies, including conducting wetland and aquatic resource delineations and assessments in support of Clean Water Act compliance, baseline resource studies, and monitoring of project sites.

What you will accomplish

The successful candidate will be expected to accurately carry out field data collection, prepare reports, carry out field-based surveys and monitoring activities, coordinate with project and office managers, and complete other tasks as assigned. This is a full-time, hourly position that will be based in SWCA’s Chicago-area office located in Lombard, Illinois, but tasks are expected to primarily be field-based and may involve extended travel. Work will primarily be carried out in the Midwest but could potentially include assignments in the east and southeastern states. Pay is based on individual skills and qualifications.


+ Collect and oversee the collection of field data

+ Use topographic maps, aerial photographs, GPS units, and other maps and tools to determine exact locations of project areas, habitat types, and associated landforms

+ Photograph and record appropriate habitat, species, and landforms

+ Prepare and review reports and/or contribute to report sections

+ Operate SWCA vehicles. Ability to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle on rugged, backcountry roads

+ Work both independently and as a member of a team

+ Take initiative, resolve problems, and communicate with team members to ensure tasks are completed in the most effective manner

Experience and qualifications for success

+ Qualifications:

+ Minimum of two years of wetland delineation experience in the Midwest, Northcentral and Northeast, and/or Eastern Mountains and Piedmont Regions

+ Proficiency in the identification of plants of the Midwest and Southeast United States

+ Must be able to use GPS units with minimal training

+ A. or B.S. in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or a related field

+ Valid driver’s license

+ Ability to work long hours in harsh conditions

+ General knowledge of the fauna and flora of the Midwest and Southeast United States

+ Familiarity with ArcGIS, Microsoft Office Word and Excel

+ Flexibility and willingness to learn company procedures, and ability to try new, improved techniques and to make independent decisions when appropriate to the situation or make adjustments as a member of a team in order to complete tasks in the most efficient and accurate manner
