Vehicle Driver/Program Assistant
This position receives an hourly rate of pay and is assigned to work less than 1,000 hours from the employees start date to the employee’s anniversary date. Work hours can vary from week to week.
DIRECTLY REPORTS TO:
The Operations Manager & Support Staff Manager
To provide participant transportation before and after, as well as assistance at, recreation programs for individuals with disabilities.
A minimum of 21 years of age, have a valid Illinois Driver’s License and pass drug screening.
Meet FVSRA driving standards which includes:
- May not have revoked or suspended license within the last 24 months.
- May not have more than two moving violations (convictions) within past 12 months
- May not have more than three moving violations (convictions) within past 24 months.
Able to provide timely and safe transportation service to FVSRA participants.
Have an interest and commitment in working with individuals with disabilities.
Demonstrate maturity, professionalism, flexibility, enthusiasm, strong interpersonal skills, communication skills and ability to work effectively with participants, supervisors, staff, board members, facility non-FVSRA staff and all members of the general public
Able to work independently and solve problems relating to transportation or under stressful situations.
- Be safety conscious.
Obtain Handle with Care Certification and First Aid/CPR and AED certifications.
- Ability to engage in activities requiring physical exertion.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Vehicle Driver Duties & Responsibilities:
Adhere to program assignment and transportation schedule.
Safely transport participants of varying ages and abilities to and from predetermined locations.
Safely load and unload individuals in wheelchairs in and out of vehicles, which includes properly securing the wheelchair to the vehicle and ensuring the participant is secure in their chair.
- Pays strict attention to housekeeping of the vehicles and general facility conditions.
Follow all vehicle/driving laws and regulations.
Legibly complete, maintain and/or submit vehicle/driver paperwork; i.e. Safety Inspection Form, PDRMA Forms, pre-trip inspection form, etc.
Proactively respond to situations and communicate all vehicle incidents to the Operations Manager.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Program Assistant Duties & Responsibilities:
Adheres to all safety policies and procedures and the FVSRA Policy Manual.
- Must be able to respond to needs of individuals with disabilities.
Ability to follow directions and carryout such instructions in a safe and appropriate manner.
Communicate efficiently and effectively with FVSRA Program Leaders regarding any program-related concerns and programmatic questions.
Supervise participants of varying ages in FVSRA programs, encourage participation and promote appropriate interactions.
Assist and supervise up to four participants, including awareness of dietary needs, medications, allergies, seizures, behavioral management needs, wheelchair assistance and daily living skills.
- Communicate clearly with small groups of people and individuals.
Able to take initiative and help the Program Leader with program preparations such as setting up, greeting participants/parents/guardians, collecting lunches, etc.
Attend orientation, meetings, in-services, and trainings.
Immediately reports all accidents and unsafe conditions to the Program Leader, as well as cooperate and assist in incident investigations.
Provide timely responses to phone calls, voicemails, and written materials, whether received by mail, facsimile, text, and e-mails.
- Treats public concerns with the utmost and courteous attention.
Proactively respond to situations and communicate all incidents to the Support Staff Manager.
- Record and report hours worked on a bi-weekly basis.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

The Vehicle Driver/Program Assistant must, with or without reasonable accommodations, be able to perform the following functions:
Gather, load, transport, unload and/or set-up program supplies/equipment.
- Supervise individuals, including at times the use of physical restraints.
- Physically assist individuals in wheelchairs by pushing, pulling or providing stabilization on unknown terrain.
- Physically transfer individuals from wheelchair to chair, into and out of vehicles, from pool deck into pool, in washroom facilities, etc.
- Active participation in programs.
- Lift and carry as much as 50 pounds for as long a distance as 300 feet.
The employee may be exposed to elements when loading and unloading participants and driving to and from programs or when assisting with outdoor functions. Most activities are performed indoors; these conditions include lighting and temperature.
