Job Description

Research Assistant – Material Science – Lemont, IL

Kelly Government Solutions is a strategic supplier and business partner to the federal government and its key suppliers. We are currently seeking a Research Assistant to work onsite with a prestigious research institution in Lemont, IL.

The research assistant will support bioconversion projects that focus on unexplored separations issues that currently limit the potential of many renewable energy technologies.

Specifically, the project aims at integrating nanostructured adsorbents into bioprocesses for the facile recovery of biofuels and bioproducts and/or toxic metabolic intermediates. These positions require technicians to work in a collaborative environment with molecular biologists, microbiologists, metabolic engineers, materials scientists, and mechanical engineers.

Primary responsibilities include working with and generating novel materials, surface treating with organic adsorbents, basic separations and distillation techniques, and bacterial culture. Further tasks include increasing the scale of materials synthesis and establishing quantitative analytics for recovery success. They will also be engaged in establishing growth protocols for engineered prokaryotes on feedstocks that are based upon zero- or negative-value waste streams. Superior candidates will be able to assist with analytical protocol development, maintenance of sterile bacterial cultures, generation of growth media that contain wastes, and, potentially, metabolic engineering of biofuel-producing strains. Specialized expertise is often required in the following categories:

+ Proficiency with basic organic chemistry techniques

+ Materials characterization methods (chemical composition, structure and properties of substances and of the chemical processes and transformations that they undergo)

+ Analytical instrumentation (HPLC and GC-MS)

+ Fermentation processes

+ Chromatographic and membrane separation techniques

Education requirements: Master’s level or B.S. in disciplines described above plus 2-5 years relevant experience
