Patient Care Technician

Location: Proctor Campus

Shift: Full time/36 hrs per week6:30P-7:00A


The Patient Care Technician will assist Registered Professional Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses in the provision of patient care by performing assigned patient care and unit maintenance activities.

Patient Care

+ Receive patient into treatment area, obtain weight, temperature, blood pressure (pre and post) and document findings on flow sheet.

+ Perform and record vital signs and all other parameters of ESRD patients as per policy and/or state regulations.

+ Obtain blood samples and culture specimens and prepare for shipment.

+ Review dialysis prescriptions, note general physical and mental condition of patient through observations appropriately.

+ Provide chronic hemodialysis therapy, including but not limited: recommendation of UF goal, initiate dialysis via approved access using proper cannulation techniques, comply with all safety measures, monitor patient vital signs according to policy – report abnormal findings to nurse.

+ Collect patient data, monitor and document status of vascular access, document patient observations and seek guidance when levels are out of the normal range for ESRD patients.

Equipment Care

+ Set up, maintain and monitor dialysis machines and systems

+ Monitor dialysis machines and RO water systems for correct functioning, respond to visual and audible alarms and make appropriate adjustments before, during and after dialysis treatment.

+ Clean and disinfect dialysis machines and equipment according to UnityPoint Health procedures

Quality Monitoring and Performance

+ Complete treatment records after each treatment according to policy and procedure.

+ Review and report inventories and supply shortages to inventory manager.

+ Know and comply with UnityPoint Health policy and procedures in accordance with state and federal regulations for patient care services.

+ Participate in quality improvement programs as requested.

Basic UPH Performance Criteria

+ Demonstrates the UnityPoint Health Values and Standards of Behaviors as well as adheres to policies and procedures and safety guidelines.

+ Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance.

+ Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position.

+ Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, TJC, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.

+ Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year.

+ Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.
