Job Description

Applications of those who desire an opportunity to be part of cutting-edge research in a scale-up facility are invited for the position of Textile Chemist. This position is a result of a grant-based partnership between Natural Fiber Welding (NFW) and Bradley University, who is the employer of record. We are seeking an exceptional candidate who can contribute to this partnership and work in collaboration at Bradley University on behalf of NFW.

Natural Fiber Welding, Inc. and Bradley University, both located in Peoria Illinois, have partnered with the Department of Defense (through an STTR grant) to develop yarns for energy storage. These yarns have been in development for over two years and are ready to be converted into functional textiles. We are looking for a Textile Chemist who possesses knowledge of textile conversion processes and who can integrate yarn conversion (knitting and weaving) with functional chemical treatments (e.g. electrolyte coatings, abrasion-resistant coatings).

The successful candidate will be a self-starter and explore various yarn-to-fabric conversion methods and fabric treatment techniques. This individual will assist in the pilot-stage production of energy storage fabric and must have experience in small-scale fabric production methods.

Position duties include:
• Work with the supercapacitor yarn development team to tailor yarns for various conversion processes.
• Conduct in-house experiments and experiments at partner institutions to evaluate how our supercapacitor yarns behave when converted into fabrics.
• Stay up-to-date on the state-of-the-art yarn-to-fabric conversion technologies.
• Work hands-on with yarn conversion partner(s)

Requirements include:
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in textile science (or related discipline)
• Textile chemistry & conversion experience in an industrial R&D setting
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
• Ability to take direction from multiple people
• Experience in working with computers and data analysis tools
• Analytical, logical thought process and meticulous attention to detail
• Permanent residency or US Citizenship

This job is based in Peoria, Illinois but may require up to 40% travel time to our partners’ facilities. The incumbent will spend at least 10% of their time in continuous learning efforts to maintain expertise (and grow) their knowledge of the core discipline and related disciplines. Findings will be communicated regularly and in-detail with the rest of the NFW & Bradley University team. Ability to lift 50 pounds and stand for up to 6 hours per day is required.
