Job Description

FERMI Research Alliance, LLC has an opening for a Scientific Distributed Computing Specialist in Batavia, Illinois. Position Summary: Integrate the HEPCloud technologies in the FermiGrid and CMS Tier-1 computing clusters. Develop and implement use cases and example services for the Container Management Project. Demonstrate the capabilities of the technologies evaluated, such as Kubernetes. Integrate state of the art Data movement technologies, on-demand cloud storage, and regional data caches with HEPCloud computing resources during the next HEPCloud Project phase. Assist with the smooth operation of the Fermi General Purpose Grid, the CMS Tier-1 facility, and the CMS LHC Physics Center, especially in providing an effective large-scale scientific computing infrastructure for efficient analysis of data. Respond to scientific computing needs using effective operations of servers, data storage, data movement, and batch systems. Acting independently under general direction, apply skills in multiple areas of computing to central, scientific and/or high-performance systems and services in support of the Laboratory’s mission. Design specification, implementation, development and/or the operation of complex, state-of-the-art scientific, information, computing, networking, storage, business and/or administrative systems. Planning and analysis of the integrity and evolution of multi-component systems and services, including security, capacity and logistical planning. Design, develop, implement, document and/or operate moderately complex scientific, information, computing, networking, storage, business and/or administrative systems and/or services, applying multi-disciplinary knowledge and skills, as required to meet the Laboratory needs. Provide input for the purchase, deployment, integration and maintenance of systems and/or services. Define service levels and measure performance metrics. Diagnose, monitor and analyze the performance of information, computing, networking and/or storage systems and/or services. Gather, interpret, and implement requirements and information from users for specific system and service projects, and obtain feedback.
