The Center for Health and the Social Sciences (CHeSS), founded in 2005, strives to continue the legacy at the University of Chicago for being a leader in both research and training at the intersection of health and the social sciences. We foster innovation and collaboration, as well as excellence in research, scholarship, and training. CHeSS staff supports the writing and submission of grant applications and fundraising proposals, brainstorms and coordinates new research initiatives and projects, and provides expert research methods consultation during formative and operational phases of work.

Manages, facilitates, and monitors the daily activities of clinical research and clinical trials. Performs a variety of duties involved in the collection, documentation, analysis and reporting of clinical research and clinical trial data. Manages the strategic, administrative, operational, and financial decisions that impact clinical research and clinical trials conducted across the University.

T1: Entry-level position with appropriate licenses/training certifications. Has basic skills in an analytical or scientific method or operational process. Works within clearly defined standard operating procedures and/or scientific methods and adheres to quality guidelines. Work is completed with close supervision.

  1. Responsibilities

The job provides technical support activities related to documents, analyzes, and reports on clinical research data. Provides input to support the strategic, administrative, operational, and financial decisions that impact clinical research conducted across the University.

1) Perform specific protocol procedures (specimens and data management, survey/questionnaire administration and the like) required to conduct the study and retain research subjects., 2) Understands protocols and may collect information about adverse events (AEs), identified in the protocol or investigator brochure., 3) Prepares for or participate in quality assurance audits under supervision or following specific protocol procedures., 4) Participates in study-related documentation, such as protocol worksheets, procedural manuals, adverse event reports, institutional review board documents, or progress reports., 5) Performs other related work as needed.

Unit-specific Responsibilities***

1) The Dental Assistant has the responsibility of assisting in providing dental services for patients of the University of Chicago Medicine (UCM) Dental Research Study Clinic.

2)Along with clinical responsibilities, the dental assistant will also have research responsibilities for studies that are conducted in the clinic.

3) Help patients feel comfortable before, during, and after dental treatment.

4) Prepare patient for dental treatment by welcoming, comforting, seating, and draping patient.

5) Schedule clinical appointments with patients in person and over the phone.

6) Ask about the patient’s medical history, blood pressure, and pulse.

7) Document measurements and treatments in the electronic dental record. Position and pass instruments for dentist’s access.

8) Suction patient saliva and debris during treatments.

9) Maintain patient confidence by keeping information confidential.

10) Provide patients with instructions for oral self-care following dental treatments.

11) Teach patients appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health (e.g., tooth brushing, flossing and nutritional counseling).

12) Provide information to patients and employees by answering questions and requests.

13) Provide other assistance to clinical staff as needed.

14) Prepare treatment room for patient by following prescribed procedures and protocols.

15) Adhere to infection control and sterilization procedures and prepare instruments and equipment.

16) Provide instrumentation by working with Central Sterile Processing to sterilize and deliver instruments to treatment area.

17) Maintain safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.

18) Maintain dental supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies.

20) Support, facilitate and coordinate daily study activities while working with investigators and other staff.

21) Educate patients about study procedures to be performed, the study visit schedule, what to report between and during visits, and the risks and benefits of the procedures.

22) Plan and coordinate the schedule for study non-clinical visits and activities.

23) With guidance from study protocols, investigators, and staff, conduct screening and informed consent for potential study enrollees, administer study questionnaires/surveys with study enrollees, collect intraoral images of study enrollees.

24) Protect patients and data confidentiality by ensuring security of research data and personal health information and compliance with federal regulations and sponsor protocols.

  1. Education, Experience, and Certifications

Minimum requirements include vocational training, apprenticeships or the equivalent experience in related field (not typically required to have a four-year degree).

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through < 2 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications


1)****Dental Assisting National Board’s Certified Dental Assistant certification


1) 2 years of experience as a dental assistant, handling administrative tasks, and maintaining a dental office
