POSITION:   Assistant Groundskeeper F/T -Exempt

REPORTS TO: Head Groundskeeper


ASM, the leader in privately managed public assembly facilities, has an excellent and immediate opening for an Assistant Groundskeeper at Soldier Field. The Assistant Groundskeepers primary responsibility will be maintaining the field for Chicago Fire MLS soccer matches, as well as assisting with other field events, and the surrounding parkland grass areas, by performing personally the following duties:



Includes the following - other duties may be assigned:



  • Responsible for the care, maintenance, and upkeep of the playing field grass and the surrounding parkland grass areas.

  • Operates vehicles and powered equipment, such as mowers, tractors, twin-axle vehicles, snow blowers, sod cutters, and forklifts.

  • Mow or edge lawns, using power mowers or edgers.

  • Watering the field and controlling the irrigation system.
  • Mix and spray or spread fertilizers, herbicides, or insecticides onto grass by hand or with automatic sprayers or spreaders.

  • Patch and repair playing field grass, adding sand to the field where needed.

  • Assisting with tarping the playing field, when necessary.

  • Assist with the installation and removal of the field goals, team benches, field stairs, and other structures as needed for football games, soccer games, or other special events.

  • Removing old sod and installing new sod.

  • Installation and removal of terraplas flooring for concerts.
  • Monitoring the irrigation system, notating any problems with the systems function, and placing service calls when necessary.

  • Marking irrigation lines in the grass before parkland events.

  • Making snow on the sledding hill when necessary during the winter.



  • Directing field labor staff when placing or removing field tarps.

  • Directing field labor staff when placing or removing terraplas flooring.

  • Directing field labor staff when placing or removing team benches, field stairs, or goals / goal posts



  • Researching sod farms, contacting farms, assessing sod budget with the accounting department and placing appropriate sod orders throughout the year.

  • Collecting sod tickets after sod installation and delivering to the accounting department to ensure correct payment on delivered materials.
  • Monitoring the weather through our Weather Command station and speaking with local meteorologists to plan for inclement weather scenarios.

  • Ordering supplies in large quantities such as salt, sand, straw, and fertilizer



To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Bachelors Degree from a four-year college or university with a concentration in Groundskeeping, Landscaping, or related field. Subsequent groundskeeping experience may be supplemented for college degree.

  • Three to five years related experience and/or training as a groundskeeper or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

  • Working knowledge of the principles of groundskeeping, field maintenance, and equipment.

  • Groundskeeping experience in an NFL, MLS, or NCAA environment is preferred.

  • Must be willing to obtain an Illinois Pesticide Applicator License



Position requires ability to:

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office

  • Ability to work under limited supervision and to interact with all levels of staff including upper management

  • Ability to work long and irregular hours that may vary due to functions and may include, daytime, evenings, weekends and holidays
