Full Time Controller

Fairlawn Real Estate is a dynamic real estate firm that specializes in acquiring, renovating, developing and managing real estate projects in Central Illinois.  The position offers an exciting opportunity to join a growth-oriented organization with a genuinely enjoyable work environment. 

Based in Champaign, Illinois, the Fairlawn team member will be responsible for the accounting functions of the company, including production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk and enhance the accuracy of the companys reported financial results.  In newly formed business units, the Controller will work closely with other staff to set up the financial statements and processes necessary.  The Controller will also oversee the corporate accounting department, including managing the team and their professional development.  This position will report directly to the company President.


  • Oversee the accurate and timely dissemination of financial management reports, both to Fairlawn Real Estate as well as the companies for which it manages real estate operations

  • Coordinate preparation of companys annual financials and filings
  • Calculate and issue financial and operating metrics
  • Assist in preparation of the annual budget and forecasts
  • Calculate variances from the budget and report significant issues to management
  • Manage accounting operations and staff and maintain documented system of accounting policies and procedures
  • Ensure accurate and timely processing of accounts payable and accounts receivable functions
  • Assist management in the processing of payroll
  • Oversee reconciliation process of all bank and loan statements
  • Establish and maintain systems and controls over accounting transactions
  • Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings
  • Assist in cash management between multiple companies owned and/or operated by Fairlawn Real Estate

Skills and Knowledge Requirements:

  • Fluency in a variety of computer applications required (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite)

  • Experience with property management software a plus (e.g. Buildium, Yardi, Propertyware)

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Superior attention to detail, high energy and positive attitude
  • Strong problem solving and decision making skills
  • Ability to work independently and also to work closely with other team members
  • Experience managing a team including driving their growth and professional development
  • Ethical and professional conduct and integrity beyond reproach


Education and Previous Employment Requirements:

  • BS/BA degree in Accounting or Finance required, CPA preferred
  • 5-10+ years experience in an accounting role


Additional Requirements:

  • Valid drivers license and dependable vehicle.  Limited in-town usage of personal vehicle for errands required, any out-of-County personal mileage reimbursed at the Federal rate
