TITLE:    Cook/Kitchen Worker


FSLA STATUS:  Non-Exempt




  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to pass fingerprint criminal background check.


Special Knowledge/Skills/Requirements:

  • Methods and procedures for preparing and serving food in large quantities
  • Standard food service terminology, appliances and equipment

  • Knowledge of safety and sanitation practices and procedures
  • Knowledge of proper methods for the preparation and serving of food
  • Understanding of basic arithmetical calculations and measurement processes
  • Ability to adhere to standard menus and recipes in the preparation of foods and snacks
  • Ability to operate and maintain food service related equipment
  • Ability to work efficiently and effectively
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships
  • Training or coursework in nutrition, and in safety and sanitation procedures preferred
  • One year of experience in quantity food preparation in a commercial, institutional or school food service facility preferred


REPORTS TO: Cafeteria Manager


JOB GOAL: Under immediate supervision of the Cafeteria Manager, performs semi-skilled tasks in the preparation (cooking, baking, salad preparation in large quantities) and serving of food at a school cafeteria. Assists in the maintenance of a food service facility in an orderly, safe and sanitary condition and completes related work as required by supervisor. Assists in the cleaning of the kitchen and serving areas, utensils and equipment as required.


PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: Listed below but not limited to:

Operates a variety of equipment used in the preparation, packaging and serving of sandwiches, salads, relishes, hot entrees and a variety of other foods

Prepares, cooks and bakes a variety of food and baked goods, including but not limited to cakes, cookies, breads, rolls and vegetables

Reviews recipes and menus, and estimates needed ingredients and the time required for the cooking and baking of a variety of foods and baked goods

Weighs and measures accurately

Assists with the set up of steam table and serving line

Checks for proper food temperature, both during preparation and on the serving line

Serves hot and cold foods, salads, beverages, desserts and snacks

Ability to follow instructions regarding the serving of proper amounts

Assists in maintaining the food service facility in a safe, clean and sanitary condition

Ability to properly clean and care for food service equipment

Stores food and kitchen related items as needed.

Scrapes and washes dishes, utensils and trays.

Cleans work areas and equipment.



Operates automatic dishwasher and performs necessary cleaning.

Handle and dispose of refuse, using proper sanitation.

Assists in the receiving, inspecting, wrapping and storing of foodstuffs, supplies and materials

Assists in inventory control and in the requisitioning of foodstuffs, supplies and materials

Adheres to all safety and sanitation rules and regulations

Adheres to all Ball-Chatham School Lunch Policies

Performs other duties as required


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and work year in accordance with recommendations established by the Superintendent of Schools and immediate supervisor.



Mental Demands: calculating, comparing, evaluation, interpreting, organizing, consulting, analyzing, planning, documenting, specifying, coordinating, implementing, and presenting.

Physical Demands: bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting, reaching, standing for prolonged periods of time, walking, exerts 20 to 50 pounds of force frequently to lift, manual dexterity to operate food service related equipment, grasping, repetitive motions, talking, hearing and visual acuity, ability to read and write, ability to speak and understand the English language.

Environmental Conditions: The work is performed primarily indoors.


EVALUATION: The basis of the evaluation will be the extent to which the performance responsibilities of the job are successfully handled and the extent to which yearly action plans and job goals are met (as applicable).
