We have an opening for an Analytical Scientist with LC-MS expertise in the Analytical Sciences Team, part of the Technology R&D function in Skokie, IL. This position will act as a resource responsible for applying LC-MS technology to support both collaborative projects and a new high throughput screening lab. The individual selected must demonstrate a depth and breadth of knowledge in chromatography, mass spectrometry and data analysis in both applications and hardware. This position will develop and support analytics for a wide range of applications relating to metabolomics, fermentation, chemicals and fuels. The position is based at our headquarters in Skokie, IL.
Specific Job Accountabilities Include:
+ Responsible for setting up high-throughput methods and data analysis workflows for our in-house Bio-foundry
+ Adapt and streamline LC-MS methods for current projects and help in the development of methods for new projects
+ Investigate and research new and novel LC-MS methodologies to minimize sample handling time, improve accuracy and increase throughput
+ Log and catalogue updates to methods and laboratory SOPs
+ Act as the central point of contact for the Synthetic Biology Automation group
+ Work collaboratively with other scientific team members, including the fermentation and synthetic biology groups, to understand the project analytical needs, interpret complex scientific data, and clearly communicate those results to the scientific teams
+ Conceptualize experiments to test and ensure the most appropriate analytical techniques are implemented for each program
+ Provide support for LC-MS instrument maintenance and troubleshooting
+ Develop and institute holistic quality control safeguards and practices into each method for optimal multi-day LC-MS data sets
+ Perform, check, and verify instrument calibrations
+ Work with other members of the team to perform routine and preventative maintenance on a weekly and monthly basis
+ Ph.D. with at least one year of experience post degree or MS with six or more years of experience in chemistry or closely related field
+ Minimum of 5 years direct hands-on experience with LC-MS analysis and method development.
+ Hands on sample preparation and LC-MS analysis experience with small molecules is required.
+ Able to interface and effectively communicate with co-workers and customers from diverse backgrounds and educational levels.
+ Capable of independently developing and troubleshooting analytical methods.
+ Adaptable team player that thrives in a cutting edge, fast paced, entrepreneurial environment where priorities can change quickly.
+ Must have a fundamental understanding of other complementary analytical techniques used in biological and chemical analysis – such as GC, GCMS, NMR, ICP and FTIR.
+ Strong experience in chromatography data systems, mass spec databases and MS Office.
+ Able to travel nationally and internationally up to 5% as needed (Post COVID).
+ PhD in chemistry, analytical chemistry or related field
+ Experience with developing, implementing, and analyzing untargeted metabolomics studies
+ Previous experience with both QQQ and HRAM instruments
+ Hands-on experience with UHPLC method development
+ Familiar with automation and high throughput sample preparation
+ Familiar with metabolite extraction and separation
+ Experience with LC-MS software, including Chromeleon, Xcalibur and Aria.
+ Experience with complementary techniques to reverse phase, such as HILIC and mixed mode chromatography, will be highly useful.
+ Previous experience in an industrial analytical research environment related to biotechnology, chemicals, or renewable energy.
+ Demonstrated experience with sample preparation/introduction techniques such as SPE and online/offline sample fractionation.
+ Experience with proteomics
+ Hands-on experience with industrial safety practices such as OSHA, PSM, etc.
