Reporting to the Department Manager, Supervisor, Lead, or Charge laboratory personnel, and according to established policies and procedures, obtains blood and other specimens from inpatients, outpatients, ED patients, extended care facility patients, physician office patients, clinic patients, home care patients, and any other offsite location patients for laboratory testing according to licensed physician’s or provider’s orders. In doing so, obtains needed supplies, verifies patient identification, prepares skin sites, and performs venipuncture, arterial puncture (per department protocol) and skin punctures according to established aseptic techniques. Labels specimens and transports same to laboratory for analysis. Performs clerical and/or computer duties associated with the laboratory. Maintains professional relationship with patients, staff, and physicians. The following are general characteristics of this job, although duties may vary by assigned area and/or shift.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Completion of formal structured phlebotomy program OR 3 months’ full-time phlebotomy experience or equivalent.
Satisfactory completion of PBT certifying exam within 6 months of attaining eligibility (within 18 months after starting as a full-time Phlebotomist I or within up to 30 months, based on hours/pay period, after starting as a part-time Phlebotomist I).
Depending on performance, an additional 90 day extension may be granted.
Failure to obtain required certification within defined timeframe will result in termination.
Associate or baccalaureate degree in science related area.
1 or more years’ full-time experience (or equivalent) performing phlebotomy in hospital or large clinic.
