Job Description

GENERAL JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for the compassionate, safe and efficient movement of behavioral health clients between healthcare facilities. Will respond for clients requiring supervised transportation services as determined by the IDHS/DMH and provided for under the Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Code (405 ILCS 5/3-605 and 3-819) .

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: (This list may not include all the duties assigned.)

+ Supervision of all patients as assigned to his/her for transportation.

+ Provide de-escalation techniques and aggression preventative strategies when necessary.

+ Assist the healthcare facility staff in escorting the patient and their belongings to and from the vehicle at both originating and receiving facilities.

+ Assure the accuracy and completeness of all company and patient contact paperwork.

+ Be responsible for all equipment and supplies as specified on company vehicle check-off sheets and inventory requirements.

+ Maintains current State of Illinois drivers license according to provisions set forth by the Illinois Secretary of State and Department of Motor Vehicles.

+ Maintain professional appearance and attitude at all times.

+ Help promote a positive company image.

+ Accepts other duties as assigned.


Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of the population-specific characteristics. Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations and procedures required to administer patient supervision and transportation. Mathematics knowledge necessary to perform calculations as required. Knowledge to supervise and document patient behavior. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment. Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods and techniques of professional supervision and transportation between healthcare facilities. Skill in preparing and maintaining records, writing reports, and responding to correspondence. Skill in developing and maintaining quality assurance. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public, including communicative skills. Ability to maintain quality control standards. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures. Ability to communicate clearly.

+ Valid High School Diploma or equivalent.

+ Valid State of Illinois Driver’s License.

+ Must be able to report for duty when emergency staffing conditions occur (at most 20 hours per week).

+ Must value the human dignity, personal worth and quality of life of each client.

+ Successfully complete CPI training program.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports directly to the Illinois Patient Transport Project Manager.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients belongings, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires sitting for extensive periods of time. Occasionally lifts patients items and places into vehicle trunk. Requires corrective vision and hearing to normal range. Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours. Requires some exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids. Requires working with equipment requiring voice, sight, and auditory capabilities (corrected) within normal range. Requires ability to intervene early and effectively to defuse and avoid acceleration of a potentially verbally escalating individual.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Frequent driving in inclement weather and other conditions common, while supervising behavior health individuals with a variety of symptoms.
