Job Description

JOB TITLE: System Status Controller

GENERAL JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for receiving requests for ambulance, wheelchair service, inputting information into the CAD System, selecting and dispatching the appropriate unit(s) to respond to the type of call and maintaining correct system status control by relocating units to post locations as designated by the system status plan.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports directly to the Director of Communication

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: (This list may not include all duties assigned)

+ Receives incoming emergency and non-emergency requests for service by ascertaining all pertinent information from the calling party to determine the urgency and location of the situation. Strictly maintains patient confidentiality.

+ Selects and dispatches the appropriate unit(s) to respond to emergency and nonemergency requests for ambulance service based on the type of call and scheduled time.

+ Provides the responding unit with appropriate information for patient condition, location and destination, routing instructions utilizing knowledge of geographic area and map book resources, and the need for special equipment.

+ Relocate, as required, units from one post location to another as designated by the System Status Plan.

+ Answers telephone, takes messages, and gives routine information in accordance with established procedures.

+ Assist in assuring accuracy and timeliness of Physician Statements of Medical Necessity prior to dispatching resources for medical transportation.

+ Prepares statistical reports and appropriate paperwork in a timely manner and ensures the correctness of all information. Enters statistical information into computer.

+ Follows operations service center policies and procedures.

+ Will assist as needed with the scheduling of field and operations service center personnel.

+ Attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested.

+ Enhances professional growth and development through in service meetings, educational programs, conferences, etc.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of System Status Management and its relationship to patient care.

Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations and procedures related to

dispatching ambulances. Skill in English grammar and spelling. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective relationships with staff. Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. Ability to maintain quality control standards. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Ability to interpret adapts and applies guidelines and procedures. Ability to communicate clearly.


+ High School Diploma or equivalent

+ Completion of an Emergency Medical Dispatch course.

+ Previous experience as a System Status Controller preferred

+ Typing ability of 35-40 wpm.

+ Data entry experience

NOTE: In the interest of public safety, the ability to speak in a clear, unencumbered manner is a Bona Fide Occupational Qualification (BFOQ) for this position.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires prolonged sitting. Requires frequent bending, stooping, or stretching. Requires hand, eye coordination and manual dexterity. Requires the ability to distinguish letters or symbols. Requires the use of office equipment such as computer terminals, telephones, fax machine or copiers. Requires some exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids. Requires working with equipment requiring voice, sight and auditory capabilities (corrected) within normal range.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Primary duties will be performed in an office environment. May be exposed to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations, inclement weather and other conditions common to a pre-hospital environment. Will have significant contact with staff and customers.
