Laboratory Technician, Sweeteners (Decatur, IL)

The applicant will be responsible for working within the carbohydrate R&D Labs with Technologists and Scientists to set-up and conduct experiments to support growth projects and products support. The technician will be responsible for sampling of products to customers and maintaining an inventory of samples and sample lab supplies. The applicant should collaborate to support on the new developments, methods and innovations related to carbohydrate. The candidate will add value to ingredients by developing new methods of characterization of biomaterials and help to build a platform of new ingredients versus their functionalities while ensuring compliance with safety, environmental and quality programs.

Job Responsibilities :

+ Performs sample analysis, documents analytical results and lab activities including but not limited to food safety, product quality, housekeeping and hazardous waste generation, review in process and finished product analytical data for completion, accuracy and quality/food safety implications, communicates interdepartmentally regarding lab activities, analytical data, product quality and food safety. Assists with daily housekeeping duties, performs basic instrument maintenance and repair.

+ Working conditions: Respiratory Hazards (Dust), Chemicals: Hazardous chemicals present, Moves/Transports fifty pounds, Moves to and from lab workstations, Positions self to reach items and instruments on lab benches, Diagnoses mechanical problems with lab instruments, Operates lab instruments, Installs and removes lab instruments, Inputs lab data, Organizes documentation, Communicates and exchanges information with colleagues of other departments, Ensures conformance with policy, Judges functionality of lab instruments, Judges accuracy of lab data, Opens, prepares and analyzes samples, Lifts and carries samples, instruments, steel transfer vessels, boxes, supplies etc.

+ Maintain advanced scientific techniques (e.g. x-ray diffraction, DSC, imaging) to elucidate molecular interactions and functionality of carbohydrates and complex systems.

+ Ensure safe working practice in research labs, pilot plants, and manufacturing facilities to meet or exceed safety goals.

+ Work with scientists to deliver on projects deadline.

Requirements and Qualifications :

+ Bachelor’s degree within Materials Chemistry, Agricultural Engineering, or similar education

+ 2+ year of experience in industry experience with professional maturity.

+ Experimental design knowledge and an ability to communicate verbal and written, with highly technical to non-technical customers.
