Job Description

Space is a harsh environment, with extreme variations in temperature and high levels of radiation of various types. When the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) needed protection for its spacecraft and components, Alion stepped up and created mission-critical thermal coatings as well as the complex processes needed to apply them. We supplied coatings for the Gemini, Apollo, and Saturn programs – among many others – as well as for use on global positioning satellites Today, HII continues to support NASA as the space agency moves forward with new programs and challenges. And our thermal coatings are used on private and public sector space vessels, alike.

Essential Job Responsibilities

+ Under limited supervision, performs chemical laboratory tasks of some complexity and variety. Provides advanced technical support in one or more areas of science or technology.

+ Perform or assist more experienced staff in performing complex laboratory assignments.

+ Performs sample preparation/extraction/digestion and analysis of environmental samples according to established procedures.

+ Operate standard experimental testing equipment of moderate complexity and performs routine equipment maintenance. Adheres to QA/QC requirements in the performance of job duties.

+ Maintain inventory in warehouse. Receives packages and keeps accurate counts on equipment and consumable items.

+ Decontaminates and maintains equipment to be used in the field for sampling projects.

+ Observes experiments, records experimental data and prepares reports. Files completed laboratory reports.

+ Perform lab waste accumulation activities to support compliance with the waste management plan for the facility.

+ Provide oral and written reports to the supervisor.

+ Perform computer data entry and record management activities.

+ Comply with security procedures in the performance of duties.

+ Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

+ Associates Degree or other 2 year technical degree in related discipline and 3 years of related experience; or High School Diploma or equivalent and 5 years related experience.

+ Good communication skills.

+ Considerable knowledge of laboratory and experimental procedures and ability to apply this knowledge in performing assigned laboratory tasks.

Physical Requirements

Most work is performed aboard ships or in industrial conditions. Shop, shipboard, warehouse, industrial environment. May be exposed to fumes, laser light, toxic chemicals, potential electrical shock and irritants including welding/burning fumes, paints, oils, greases and various cleaning solutions and solvents, noise, high heat and humidity hazards while wearing the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
