Aviation Project Manager

Hanson Professional Services Inc. has the need for an Aviation Project Manager in our St. Louis, MO, St. Charles, MO, Chicago (Lisle), IL, Peoria, IL, or Springfield, IL offices. This position requires management of the full project life cycle to meet client and Hanson’s expectations regarding scope, project deliverables, budget/financial performance, schedule, quality, communications, risk management and health and safety of project staff. The successful candidate will work directly or indirectly with clients, business development staff and project/market principals. We are looking for a charismatic, organized, detail oriented and dedicated individual who will fit with our collaborative project-team culture.

This position will be assigned to the Aviation market at Hanson, reports to a senior project manager, and will primarily manage aviation and airfield projects on behalf of the market, working with airport authorities, port and park districts, and municipality staff to develop, grow and maintain general aviation and commercial airports in and around the State of Illinois.

A Day in the Life of a Project Manager at Hanson

Here’s a snapshot of what you would do in this role:

The project manager is responsible for the planning, organizing, directing, executing, and controlling/monitoring of the scope of services, budget, schedule, deliverables, and resources required to accomplish the project objectives. This position will typically manage aviation discipline projects, but on occasion may be tasked with multi-discipline project work based on client needs.

The responsibilities of the Project Manager (PM) include:

+ Meet with clients to take detailed project scoping briefs and clarify the specific requirements of each project. A record of successful capital improvement program development and productive client interface will be key skills offered by the project manager.

+ Collaborate with technical staff within the Aviation Discipline, and other Hanson practice areas and disciplines to acquire the resources needed for project completion.

+ Develop comprehensive project management plans containing the scope, schedule, budget, and deliverables within the respective project. Use and continually develop the plan and conduct project team meetings, both internal and external.

+ Guide and participate in assembling reports, plans, specifications, and other contract/construction documents.

+ Interact with construction contractors, their staff, and subcontractors.

+ Delegate project tasks to assigned resources based on individual strengths, skill sets and experience levels.

+ Track project performance, specifically to analyze and control outcomes leading to the successful completion of short- and long-term goals.

+ Meet budgetary objectives and adjust project constraints based on financial analysis and forecasts.

+ Other duties as assigned.

What We’re Looking For

We feel the following qualifications would set you up for success in this role:

Technical Skills:

+ Record of a broad cross-section of successful aviation and airfield development and construction projects, from inception to completion, and functional understandings of both airport planning and airfield electrical, including approach and navigational aids.

+ Ability to develop professional relationships with clients and be responsive.

+ Ability to manage multiple, related projects and navigate complex activities that span business units, organizations, regions, and the related regulatory agencies.

+ Ability to understand client, regulatory agency and subcontractor agreements, including the ability to generate scope and fee for complex, multi-discipline professional service agreements

+ Demonstrated ability to read and understand project budget/financial reports

+ Demonstrated understanding of billing and accounts receivables procedures

+ Demonstrated understanding of earned value methodology and other project controls, such as scheduling and change management.

+ A commitment to implementing quality control procedures.

Education/Experience:

+ 5-15 years’ experience in project management of aviation projects in the Federal Aviation Administration Great Lakes Region is desired.

+ Bachelor’s (BS) degree in civil engineering, and registration in Illinois, Indiana, or Missouri, or the ability to acquire an Illinois registration within six months by comity.

+ Experience with airport authorities, park and port districts, municipal and local governments is required.

+ Excellent project team and client-facing communication skills

+ Familiarity with collaboration and project management software tools or ability to learn them is desired.

+ Experience with project process workflow and developing project work breakdown structures.

+ Ability to document, defend and achieve contract modifications for additional services including scope, fee, and schedule increases.

+ Advanced time management and reasoning/critical thinking skills

+ Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, Power Point and a basic understanding of Project Scheduling Platforms.

Soft Skills:

+ Must be able to communicate technical concepts to engineers, clients, and other stakeholders after consulting with or in collaboration with project team technical resources.

+ Must be able to build effective relationships with internal and external client bases and be able to effectively work with and manage project staff.

+ Must have proven ability to communicate with the public and interact positively with clients, regulatory agencies, and contractors.

+ Must be able to work independently and as a team member to problem solve and learn new technical skills.

+ Must be able to develop new business with existing clients and/or new clients and can assist with project capture plans and tactical strategy for generating winning proposals and leading project team interviews.

+ Can demonstrate ability to develop a deep knowledge of client needs within the Aviation market.

+ Can demonstrate team and client leadership capability and conflict resolution skills.

+ Must be able to effectively negotiate project scope and fee.
