ABOUT THE JOB

Onsite Substitutes fill in for absences lasting a day, a week, and sometimes longer, and are scheduled to “float” when all other staff are scheduled & present. Whether leading a classroom or supporting their teammates, Onsite Substitutes help bring to life Galileo’s curriculum, thoughtfully created by our year-round curriculum design team. We believe that our approach to learning isn’t merely a philosophy-it is a tool that will help shape the worldview of future innovators.

YOU WILL

+ When scheduled to fill an Instructor absence, prepare for and teach three rotations of Galileo curriculum as a multi-subject instructor (art, science, and innovation design challenges) and/or outdoor play to groups of up to 30 campers, typically repeating the lesson with three different groups of campers in the same age group

+ Teach the curriculum as written, adapting it as needed to improve the camper experience or accommodate individual campers, and capturing feedback to share with curriculum developers

+ Occasionally fill non-Instructor absences

+ When not scheduled to fill an absence, provide support in whatever way most benefits your team. For example: a variety of tasks from peer observation & feedback to lesson material preparation and clean up to sign making

+ Maintain safe environments for all campers and provide leadership and camp spirit to all campers

+ Contribute to and participate in daily camp activities, including check-in and check-out, opening/closing ceremonies and snack & lunch supervision and programming

+ Assist with daily set up and cleanup of camp

+ Onsite Substitutes will report to the Camp Director and receive professional development and ongoing coaching

YOU HAVE

+ College degree preferred but not required

+ Experience working with kids or in a camp setting a plus

+ Administrative experience a plus

+ Genuine love for and interest in working with children and/or education

+ Ability to maintain an excellent work ethic, a high level of energy, and exceptional enthusiasm each day

+ Flexibility to meet changing needs and demands while balancing multiple tasks efficiently

+ Desire to work collaboratively on a team, with an openness to feedback and a desire to grow professionally

+ Strong organization skills and attention to detail

+ Great communication skills, both written and verbal

+ Must be at least 18 years of age by May 26, 2023

+ Valid CPR/First Aid certification OR ability to become certified prior to the start of camp

+ Valid Mandatory Report Certrification OR ability to complete certification prior to the start of camp

COMPENSATION AND PERKS

+ Compensation for this positions starts at $14.96 per hour and ranges up to $25.25 per hour for returning staff; your exact pay rate will be determined based on a variety of factors including work location and years of employment with Galileo Camps. Summer staff positions are hourly, non-exempt roles.

WORK HOURS

Our camps operate between 7:30am and 6:00pm, Monday through Friday. Camp set up is typically Friday – Sunday, and requires one weekend of availability. Number of hours and start/finish time of each shift will vary by site, position and day.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable people with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

+ Some lifting and carrying up to 60 lbs.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

During your onboarding process, you may need to complete a Tuberculosis (TB) screening, a background check, and mandated reporter training (California only). More details will be provided during your onboarding process.
