About Joliet

The ExxonMobil Joliet Refinery is located about 40 miles southwest of Chicago in Channahon, Illinois. Residents of the area have access to many local activities, from shopping, dining and museums, to golf courses, parks, trails and auto racing events. Add to these the many opportunities the Chicago metropolitan area, or “Chicagoland,” has to offer, the Joliet Refinery makes a desirable work location.

The Joliet Refinery is the second newest refinery in the United States and celebrated its 50th year in 2022. As the center of ExxonMobil’s Midwest integrated operations, it include pipelines, lubes production, distribution and fuels marketing. The refinery is one of the most energy efficient in the Unites States and processes nearly 250,000 barrels of crude per day into gasoline, ultra-low sulfur diesel, asphalt and other products.

What role you will play in our team

The Lead Mechanical Engineer (LME) provides expert static equipment design, troubleshooting, repair, and strategic planning support. As a senior technical resource in the organization, the LME also supports technical and leadership development of the junior mechanical engineers in the group.

The role is located at the Joliet Refinery in Channahon, IL.

What you will do

+ Provide expert level mechanical engineering support for assigned Business Teams

+ Provide technical support to junior engineers in the group

+ Review and approve engineering deliverables generated by junior engineers

+ Provide break-in technical oversight as needed to resolve fixed equipment issues

+ Provide technical oversight for equipment remaining life and fitness for service (FFS) assessments

+ Provide support for Turnaround engineering and execution

+ Provide input to Turnaround worklist development

+ Provide technical oversight for turnaround engineers

+ Provide troubleshooting and solution development for emergent turnaround issues

+ Provide technical input to local capital projects to ensure quality of project design basis and detailed engineering

+ Participate in development of long term equipment reliability plans to support Risk Based Inspection (RBI) programs

+ Drive long term reliability improvement through role as Equipment Class Champion (Pressure Vessels, Piping and Valves, or Tankage)

+ Develop semi-annual equipment class improvement plan

+ Develop & steward bad actor mitigation plans to completion

+ Serve as site technical single point of contact for equipment class and provide troubleshooting guidance to resolve challenging equipment issues

+ Lead investigations to identify and mitigate root causes of reliability incidents

+ Participate as active member of applicable networks through attendance in monthly network calls, leading network initiatives, and attending network F2F meetings

+ Drive quality improvement of existing Maintenance Procedures and take lead in developing new Maintenance Procedures

+ Facilitate the technical development of junior engineers within the Joliet Competency Development Framework

+ Act as a career and technical mentor for junior engineers in the group

About you

Skills and Qualifications

We are looking for someone who has a strong mechanical engineering background and has the following qualifications:

+ Required B.S. (or higher) degree in Mechanical Engineering

+ Minimum of 8 years in oil refining, supporting fixed equipment reliability and maintenance

Preferred Qualifications/ Experience

+ Prefer candidates with experience supporting FCC, Delayed Coking, HF Alkylation, or Hydroprocessing units
