Job Description
Machinist Apprentice
Machinist apprentice will work towards being responsible for the maintenance, upkeep, repair and construction of equipment used in the casting and finishing of steel components used for railroad undercarriage support wheel assemblies. Job duties include but are not limited to; tearing down and repairing of gear boxes, motors, annealing cars or hoppers, prefabricating or refurnishing machine parts, welding, use of cutting torches, grinders and large/small hand tools. Work will be performed in the shop and in troubleshooting situations throughout the plant.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Be a minimum of 18 years of age
- It is recommended that applicants have high school diploma or present a certificate of high school equivalency test (GED), and must satisfactorily complete the following: one (1) year of general mathematics and/or one (1) year of algebra. Proof of education as stated on the application questionnaire (transcript of high school grades, showing subject taken and grades received).
- Be able to pass the company's regular post-offer medical examination, drug screen, and meet the physical qualifications necessary to do the work of the trade.
- Must be willing to work any shift and weekends as required.
- Must maintain attendance and dependability.
- Express work ethic/standards, initiative, attention to detail, and safety awareness.
- Must work well with others in a team atmosphere.
- Some experience in an industrial environment is a plus.
- Applicants must agree to abide by terms, conditions and provisions of the apprenticeship program.
Courses will be held at Southwestern Illinois College. The term of the apprenticeship of the trade is 8,000 hours.
The apprentice shall pay for his related training material at cost. Upon successful completion of the program, the Company will reimburse the journeyman for one hundred percent (100%) of the cost of such related training material.
