Description

Caterpillar’s Purchased Finished (PF) Electric Drivetrain team works with strategically aligned industry partners to specify, assess, and develop motors, generators, and power electronics used in Cat machines. As more products become electrified, there is a growing need for a broad product line of electric motors and aligned supplier partners. Determining, establishing, and developing the right supplier partnerships is critical to delivering this suite of electric motor solutions to meet performance, quality, time, and cost targets.

The position involves detailed technical work in a collaborative team environment, so strong technical capability, foundational product development skills, as well as interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills are critical. This role is primarily as an individual contributor / technical expert, although project / team leadership responsibilities may also be required.

Duties

+ Work with experts and leaders to define current state of the art and next-generation motor technologies.

+ Lead the technical effort to establish a supply base capability assessment plan and methodology.

+ Collaborate closely with a broad Caterpillar team, including systems engineering, component engineering, validation engineering, component purchasing, and strategy development around PF motor needs and capabilities.

+ Develop and understand the key elements of an optimal strategic supplier partnership, including but not limited to items such as technical offering, validation capability, commercial and Intellectual Property considerations, quality history, development approach, and supply chain resiliency.

+ Collaborate on “make vs. buy” decisions for key components.

+ Evaluate the growing supply base through both virtual and in-person assessments.

+ Stay on the leading edge of the electric motor industry, including new technologies, vendors, and capabilities.

+ Make recommendations around appropriate levels of supplier engagement, from available off-the-shelf components through joint development to potential Joint Ventures, capital investment, or acquisition.

+ Assess tradeoffs and make data-driven strategy recommendations to stakeholders in multiple positions and levels within the organization.

+ Integrate partnership assessments and recommendations into the larger Electrified Components Strategy

+ Develop, maintain, and continually update a PF motor sourcing matrix in conjunction with other parts of the organization.

Basic Qualifications

+ Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering or a related field

+ 7+ years of related work experience

+ Demonstrated understanding of and experience with electric motors

+ Previous product development experience (design, test, or analysis)

+ Demonstrated strong collaborative and interpersonal skills

Top Candidates will also have

+ Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field

+ Experience working with external suppliers

+ Knowledge of electric motor capabilities and tradeoffs

+ Experience managing intellectual property risks and considerations

Additional Information

+ This position is located in Mossville, IL or the ability for remote work, candidates outside of this location may be considered if all other requirements are met.

+ This position may require up to 40% travel

+ Domestic relocation is available

Colorado Pay Act:

Compensation

Minimum base salary for this role in Colorado is $118,632. Actual salary will be based on experience. The total compensation package, beyond base salary, also includes participation in Caterpillar’s team incentive program
