The Electrical Apprentice will learn how to maintain and improve the efficient and reliable operation of high-speed processing and packaging equipment. This includes troubleshooting, analyzing root causes, supporting improvements, testing, installing, and conducting all electrical repairs and preventative maintenance.

During you Apprenticeship , you will:

+ Be enrolled at Daley College – Industrial Electronics Technician (IET) Apprentice Program in conjunction with the ICATT Apprenticeship Program

+ Be a part-time employee at the Mondelez Chicago Bakery .

+ Attend class 2-3 days a week for ~6-8 semesters. Classes are often 5:30 – 9:30 pm.

+ Work at the Bakery in parallel with your class schedule for a combination up to 40 hours a week between school and work combined.

+ Class and work schedules are aligned with your Supervisor/Trainer at the beginning of each class/semester.

+ The costs of tuition, books (stipend), and tool are covered by Mondelez if the apprentice achieves program requirements set forth by Daley College and Mondelez.

+ Performs all duties in compliance with plant rules and practices regarding safety, conduct, sanitation, and good housekeeping.

+ Ensures conformance with all Safety, GMP’s, health code regulations, NEC, NFPA standards and Food Safety Policies.

Skills you will gain to contribute after your Apprenticeship has been completed:

+ Perform all duties in compliance with plant rules and practices regarding safety, conduct, sanitation, and good housekeeping.

+ Ensure conformance with all Safety, GMP’s, health code regulations, NEC, NFPA standards and Food Safety Policies.

+ Diagnose and repair production equipment in an industrial manufacturing environment.

+ Repair, maintain, and upgrade electrical equipment following the company guidelines and strategy.

+ Read and understand process and wiring schematics (P&IDs, One-Line Diagrams, Ladder Diagrams, Wiring Diagrams, Block Diagrams, etc.)

+ Perform PLC troubleshooting and programming.

+ Perform HMI troubleshooting and programming.

+ Able to demonstrate proper use and care of testing equipment including but not limited to megohmmeters, thermography cameras, electrical meters, probes, calibration instruments, and PLC programs.

+ Knowledge of industrial 3 phase equipment, controls, VFD drives, PLC, Communication Protocols, HMI, and control devices (e.g., Allen Bradley)

+ Able to troubleshoot and repair equipment up to 480V AC.

+ Perform calibration of 4-20 mA instruments and other low voltage systems.

+ Familiar and able to troubleshoot all signal and device types (discrete, analog, digital)

+ Understanding of ethernet IP addressing, including subnet and gateway addressing

+ Knowledgeable with basic electronic control devices so that installation and terminations can be made without physical or electrical damage to the equipment.

+ Gain the tools and knowledge to disassemble and reassemble equipment that is necessary to get to an electrical problem.

+ Ability to troubleshoot and service all electrical motors (AC, DC, servo, etc.).

+ Provide technical assistance and resolution when electrical problems are encountered.

+ Install and maintain electrical control systems.

+ Install and maintain lighting and conduit.

+ Know and understand method and sequence of operations for troubleshooting and testing processing equipment.

+ Collaborate with electrical engineers and others to identify, define, and solve problems.

+ Communicate effectively with managers, supervisors, and peers on a shift-to-shift basis.

+ Ensure execution of preventive maintenance schedules for electrical distribution system, control equipment and instrumentation using CMMS.

+ Support the development of others and yourself.

Education / Certifications:

+ High School Diploma or general education degree (GED)

+ Ability to work well in a team-based environment with limited supervision.

+ Ability to problem solve and help with practical solutions.

Physical Demands:

The following physical demands are examples of duties that may be performed:

+ Climb steps.

+ Lift 50 pounds and maintain balance.

+ Ability to perform duties in extreme varying temperatures.

+ Crawl over, under and into equipment as necessary to perform job duties.

+ Work from ladders and lifts.

Preferred:

+ 2-4 years of experience in a manufacturing environment

+ Strong soft skills regarding training and communication for knowledge transfer

Job Specific Requirements after Apprenticeship Completion

+ An understanding of Basic Electronics and Electrical Theory.

+ Install and maintain motors, motor control circuits, VFD drives, safety circuits, and 480v-power distribution.

+ At least 2-4 years manufacturing experience as a hands-on Electrician or planned completion of an approved Apprenticeship Program.

+ Ability to work well in a team-based environment with limited supervision.

+ Ability to problem solve and help with practical solutions.

What you need to know about this position:

+ Membership in the IUOE 399 Union

+ As low seniority member in Union, overtime will likely be encountered once the apprenticeship has ended and full-time employment begins.

+ Voluntary overtime opportunities are also available.

+ Shift preference is based on seniority and is not known at the time of hire.
