Patrick Engineering, a RINA company, is seeking a talented rail engineer to fill the role of Rail Staff Engineer. This is a great opportunity to start or jump-start your career with a design team as it grows nationally. The position is primarily based in IL, but future opportunities in other states will be available to motivated and technically competent candidates.
Job Summary
The Rail Staff Engineer is responsible for assisting with the preparation of design calculations, drafting (primarily, but not exclusively, in MicroStation) and design on railway engineering projects. The selected candidate will provide support in writing or technical reports, studies and recommendations and developing and evaluating railway design contract documents under the supervision of a licensed engineer.
The Staff Engineer will work with other engineers on a project team, maintaining effective communication with project team members, other engineering disciplines, and clients. The Staff Engineer at this level is in a developmental mode and is expected to seek additional training to continue their professional development as a Professional Engineer.
Primary Responsibilities
Assist in the completion of railway and civil design engineering calculations for track alignment, track profiles, rail facility infrastructure and rail operations under the supervision of a licensed engineer.
Utilize, primarily, Bentley software products (MicroStation) to develop engineering drawings.
Provide support in the preparation of material quantity takeoffs, cost estimates, and bidding documents.
Assist in the compilation of project contract documents, including technical specifications, design calculation, material quantities, and estimate of cost.
Assist in the development and evaluation of railway feasibility/concept studies.
Review of as-built drawings to assist in understanding actual conditions prior to beginning design or feasibility study.
Prepare railroad track inspection reports.
Observe safety and security procedures; report potentially unsafe conditions and use equipment and materials properly.
Complete project responsibilities per the directed scope, budget, and schedule and in accordance with QA/QC procedures.
Perform other duties associated with this position as may be appropriate
Professional Requirements
Bachelor's degree from an ABET accredited institution required (with a railway focus or equivalent fields of study)
Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification preferred or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire date.
0-4 years of entry-level design or relevant internship experience.
Strong technical written and verbal communications skills
Familiarity with MicroStation or AutoCAD required (Plus to have familiarity with both.)
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
Additional Requirements
Valid driver's license required
20% local or regional travel (i.e. job sites) anticipated based upon business need
