Permit Technician

This position will report to our client's Chicago office 4 days a week and 1 day a week remotely or from our Chicago office. 

Patrick Engineering, A RINA company, is seeking a Permit Technician to serve in a key role with one of our long-standing clients assisting with the review and processing of permits. This Technician will work as part of a project team, maintain an organized document system, and effectively communicate the status or potential concerns with the submitted documents to the project team members and others.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform review of permit applications for new projects near bridges and waterways.
Verify the project location within a custom asset management system to identify the development's proximity to a bridge or waterway.
Interpret engineering plans submitted as part of the permit application to obtain an understanding of the proposed work.
Evaluate potential impacts of the proposed work with the existing infrastructure.
Confirm none of the proposed work encroaches upon exiting foundations nor cores through any structural members.
Calculate area or volume of work being performed by the proposed work.
Document other agencies' reviews status and follow-up as necessary to ensure the permit is processed timely. 
Site inspections
Read a plan set to understand the scope of the proposed work.
Document existing site condition with photos of the site to be used for comparison after the proposed work is completed. 
Truck Routing permits
Navigate City of Chicago's Street maps to verify requested route is feasible and crosses roadway bridges. 
Coordinate/communicate with the permittee to resolve insufficient information.
Maintain Permit Documents
Understand the existing document management system.
File the proposed work applications 

QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree in civil, structural, or relevant fields of study. Equivalent years of experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
2+ years of bridge design, construction or inspection experience including basic familiarity with common bridge design elements.
Prior knowledge of how to read engineering plan sets with an emphasis on structural elements.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
Strong detail orientation and organization skills
Solid verbal and written communication skills
Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification a plus.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to travel to client office and project sites.
