Job Description
Job Summary:
Performs a variety of procedures and services including the collection and distribution of patient specimens. Works with both the laboratory and hospital information systems. Functions as a team member and actively supports the Hospital's Continuous Quality and Customer Service goals through modeling appropriate behavior and providing a work environment conducive to attaining these goals.
Job Responsibilities:
Obtains blood specimens from patients using standardized venipuncture, capillary puncture and specialized procedures. May collect specimens by iontophoresis for sweat chloride testing.
Verifies orders and diagnosis codes with the ordering physician as needed. Releases orders from EMR/orders tests in LIS. Prints labels and forms. Identifies patients using two patient identifiers and affixes patient ID band. Schedules appointments and/or completes check-in/out procedure and end-of-session audits in EMR system when necessary.
Maintains an appropriate inventory of supplies.
Answers telephone and provides information in accordance with laboratory policy.
Keeps refrigerators and freezers clean and organized. Disinfects counter tops, phlebotomy chair and equipment according to the hospital and departmental guidelines.
Supports new staff in orientation and training. Participates in continuing education and mandatory programs. Successfully completes annual competency skill assessments.
Complies with safety, hazardous materials, standard precautions, and infection control policies.
Communicates any problems or deviations from established protocol to Manager and documents in safety event reporting system.
Communicates effectively with patient, parents, physicians, ancillary hospital employees and team members.
Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others.
Displays professional appearance. Promotes professional environment, including emphasis on cleanliness and safety.
Other job functions as assigned.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent required, Associate's degree in chemical, physical, biological science, or medical technology preferred. Formal training as Medical Assistant or Phlebotomist required, successful completion of phlebotomist competencies.
Required nationally accredited certification in phlebotomy, PBT (ASCP, NHA, NPA) or equivalent. Certification must be obtained within 6 months of hire, kept current and maintained throughout employment.
Ability to resolve problems with the utilization of appropriate resources, to make informed decisions and handle complex inquiries in a courteous and timely manner; to work in a fast-paced, time critical department.
Strong verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated knowledge of Hospital and laboratory computer systems required.
Strong customer service skills and ability to interact with a diverse population of patients.
EducationHigh School Diploma/GED (Required)
