Job Summary
Under supervision from the Senior Assistant Director, Operations and Strategy, this position is responsible for the overall safety and security of the Krannert Art Museum (KAM)-its facility, visitors and staff, the museum's collection, and works on loan. The Supervisor is the primary liaison with University Facility & Services personnel. The primary purpose of this position is to ensure human safety, deter theft and damage to property, and provide internal oversight of the physical plant.

Duties & Responsibilities

Security Oversight

• Develop, implement, and revise security policies and procedures. Maintain compliance with university policies, including those related to Human Resources and union agreements.

• Keep current with the latest developments in the field of museum security technology and training.

• Serve as liaison with Campus Police & Campus Fire concerning fire prevention, overall museum security matters, and building safety and maintenance issues.

• Contribute to the development and revision of emergency response/disaster plans, accreditation documents, and facility reports.

• Oversee incoming and outgoing shipments of artwork, packages, etc., working with appropriate museum staff as needed.

• Oversee and maintain a working knowledge of all security equipment and alarm system operations, including keycard, key, and alarm code access. Manage vendor relationship for leased monitoring equipment.

• Act proactively to create a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for visitors and staff. Be on call 24/7 (or ensure a designate is identified) to monitor and/or respond to security and facility alarm calls and emergency maintenance issues for KAM.

Facility Oversight

• Serve as liaison to Facilities & Services. Oversee and maintain a broad knowledge of museum HVAC systems while working closely with museum collections personnel to ensure proper museum environment at all museum locations.

• Troubleshoot regular and emergency maintenance requests, taking action steps and routing to Facilities & Services and others, as appropriate.

• Create, submit, and track work orders, maintain building maintenance logs, and ensure work order completion. Serve as unit contact for Archibus, FabWeb, and other facilities related systems.

• Participate on all facility and capital project teams.

• Consult with appropriate museum staff regarding specialized needs for the collection, exhibitions, and programs.

• Serve as liaison to Grounds, work closely with KAM Garden volunteers to maintain museum gardens.

Evaluation and Training

• Working with appropriate hiring team, interviews, selects, and orients new Security Guards

• Conduct ongoing and annual guard evaluations and maintain a working knowledge of Performance Partnership Program for disciplinary action.

• Establishes work assignments and schedules of assigned Security Guards. Plans and schedules in-service training for Security Guards

• Working in partnership with Customer Service Specialist, coordinate security training for student gallery attendants.

• Oversee the annual state mandated completion of sexual harassment and ethics online training for security staff.

• Unit Clery Act liaison responsible for overseeing annual training for eligible museum staff.

• Schedule and coordinate safety, first aid, and CPR classes for all KAM staff

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  1. High school graduation or equivalent.
  2. Valid Illinois drivers license if essential to the position.
  3. No record of conviction of a felony, or of a crime involving moral turpitude.
  4. One year (12 months) of security experience comparable to the lower level of the series.


Preferred Qualifications

• Three (3) years of supervisory experience.

• Experience in police training, fire suppression, and/or first aid training.

• Previous experience managing building key card access, security video cameras, as well as alarm systems.

• Previous security-related experience.

• Previous experience with building and system maintenance issues and processes.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Must be computer literate.

• Ability to pass Basic Life Support First Aid Training and complete University of Illinois Campus Police Security Guard Training.

• Must have strong customer service skills.

• Security and safety procedure knowledge.

• Must have strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

• Ability to work well with staff, students, museum visitors, and others.

• Reliable, predictable attendance is essential to the position.

• A valid Illinois Driver's License is desirable.

• Ability to respond to museum emergencies on a 24-hour basis.

• Position includes extensive walking, standing, and sitting for long periods; bending, stooping, reaching; opening/closing doors weighing upwards of 25lbs.

• Ability to remain calm and professional under stressful or dangerous conditions.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 4211 - Security Guard Supervisor position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close of the search. Minimum salary for this position is $48,000. We strive to provide a competitive salary, considering factors such as available market data, internal equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints, The final salary offer will be determined through a thorough assessment of these elements. Work authorization sponsorship is not available for this position.
