Position Summary
Medical Laboratory Assistants (MLA) are responsible for the collection of blood by venous, capillary, and arterial puncture on patients of all ages while providing excellent customer service. MLA are responsible for the collection of other specimen such as urine, feces, and swabs, EKG testing, and entry of orders for laboratory testing. In addition, MLA are responsible for specimen processing, culture set up, placing barcoded samples on instruments, sending out reference specimens, and performing waived kit testing, under close supervision of technologists and technicians, with strict adherence to policies, procedures, and quality standards of the Hospital and the Laboratory. The MLA must thrive under high-pressure situations and work efficiently and harmoniously with patients, staff, and visitors.

Principle Responsibilities
Always Identifies patient with 2 identifiers and checks the tests to be drawn against the physician’s orders for accuracy.
Always performs all blood collections (i.e., venous, arterial, and capillary) accurately with rarely a need to recollect a patient’s specimen; thoroughly explains procedures, and protects patient’s privacy.
After Draw, labels all tubes within sight of the patient, verifies tubes are correctly labeled.
Always contacts/consults with appropriate personnel when difficulties are encountered in drawing.
Thoroughly washes hands between procedures, patients, and throughout the shift; follows strict principles of asepsis and antisepsis in the use of all equipment and instruments and strictly adheres to the institution’s infection control procedures.
Completes DOT training and performs collection of Drug Screen and Breath Alcohol testing.
Records the need for ordering supplies and ensures that proper supplies are on hand at all times in all areas of the laboratory.
Always wears the appropriate protective attire when performing all laboratory procedures.
Completes required checklists and reports each shift.
Responsibly completes all work procedures during the work shift without sacrificing the quality of work; requests overtime if needed.
Responds to changes in work schedule as necessary; continually uses time to departmental advantage.
Always accommodates STAT orders as requested.
Always attends to specimens as required; never allows specimens to stand for a period of time that would reduce their stability for testing.
Assists others as required and permitted.
Always reports any incomplete assignments/procedures to ensure continuity of procedures between shifts.
Has a complete understanding of departmental policies and procedures as outlined in each departmental policy and procedure manual.
Instruct new hospital personnel on proper laboratory procedures.
Always refers unsolved problems to the appropriate person.
Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span (from neonate to geriatric), and possess the ability to adapt care as needed to each patients unique needs while adhering to the department’s policies and procedures.
Always attempts to understand the needs of others in relation to laboratory test/procedure requests; uses good judgment when responding to their requests, especially those of physicians.
Consistently demonstrates the ability to assess a situation, consider alternatives, and choose the appropriate course of action.
Makes no hasty decisions; consults with other appropriate personnel when in question.
