An excellent career opportunity is currently available for a Lead R&D Engineer/Scientistin the Process Design & Development group within Honeywell UOP’s Research and Development organization located in Des Plaines, IL. This position affords a unique and visible opportunity to develop engineering solutions for new process technologies from their inception in R&D through the commercialization stage.

Key Responsibilities

-Lead process design development of Honeywell UOP R&D projects

-Define and outline scope of work for R&D projects and business requests, including identifying key inputs needed, final deliverables, and estimating timeline for completion

-Serve as a mentor to junior engineers on the Process Design Development team, including hosting learning sessions to assist in furthering their technical development

-Sustainability efforts will be at the forefront of your work, which will include CO2 emission and life-cycle assessment evaluations of technologies

-Identify novel design concepts and author invention disclosures

-Develop material balances for new process technology concepts based on preliminary yield & performance estimates

-Perform techno-economic analyses of process concepts including the assessment of key parameters impacting process profitability, safety, and reliability

-Provide key process insight to Development project teams to maximize the value delivered to clients by Honeywell UOP’s technology

-Outline requirements for and lead development of basic engineering design packages to facilitate the rapid transfer of new process technology from R&D to Engineering production

-Generate simulations to evaluate and optimize new concepts while also performing preliminary sizing and costing of equipment, interfacing with engineering and outside vendors when necessary

-Identify and lead development and implementation of new tools and methodologies to further improve the process deigns development capabilities at Honeywell UOP

-Support and advise on competitive technology analyses, exploratory projects, and growth initiatives

YOU MUST HAVE

-Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering

-Minimum of 5 years of experience in a Technology, Engineering, Research & Development, or Technical Service role withing the refining, petrochemical, gas processing, or sustainability/renewables industries is required.

WE VALUE

-10+ years of experience in a Technology, Engineering, Research & Development, or Technical Service role withing the refining, petrochemical, gas processing, or renewables industries. Relevant Chemical Engineering graduate school may be considered in lieu of experience.

-Proficient in chemical engineering fundamentals including fluid flow, heat transfer, mass transfer, and reaction engineering

-Expert in process engineering, including proficiency in Unisim, development of heat and material balance, process flow diagrams (PFDs), and process design specifications

-Experience in life-cycle assessment calculations and reviews

-Extensive project scoping & execution experience, including planning, organizing, monitoring, and successfully completing multidisciplinary projects

-Strong interpersonal skills and the capability to work effectively across multiple functional departments

-Demonstrated ability to lead & mentor others while continuing to deliver on individual project needs

-Ability to “think outside the box” to identify alternative solutions when challenges arise

-Excellent written and verbal communication skills to ensure all aspects of projects and tool development are clearly understood and well documented.
