Description
The primary responsibility of this position is to provide genetic counseling services to patients seen in the SIU clinics. Patients are seen at the St. John's Women and Children's Clinic, Park Plaza North (Decatur outreach clinic), and Simmons Cancer Institute.
 Examples of Duties
SERVICE
A. Demonstrates, by actions, commitment to the mission and the behavioral standards of
SIU School of Medicine. Provides excellent service to both internal and external
customers through collaboration and partnership; compassion and respect; integrity and
accountability; diversity and inclusion; as well as continuous learning and improvement.
B. Provide counseling services to prenatal patients through the Center for Maternal-Fetal
Medicine in affiliation with South Central Illinois Perinatal Center.
C. Provide counseling services to patients referred to the Pediatric Genetics Clinic.
D. Provide counseling services to adult patients with a personal history/family history of
cancer through the Simmons Cancer Institute.
E. Document clinical encounters.
F. Coordinate clinics and clinic schedules for the care of the patients and provide continuity
of care for patients seen. This includes obtaining pedigree and medical history, following
labs and test results, and providing case management for complex patients.
G. Serve as one of the main points of contact for all phone calls that come into the Center
for Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Department of Pediatrics, Division of Genetics &
Metabolism regarding genetic referrals, patient care inquiries, and laboratory
questions/test results.
H. Maintain a lab-tracking database to ensure proper follow-up of all patients who have
undergone testing.
I. Participate in design of electronic health records and other information technology needs
of the Center for Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Department of Pediatrics, Division of
Genetics and Metabolism.
J. Manage genetic testing laboratory contracts and supplies.
K. Adhere to the standard genetic counseling ethics and billing practices.

RESEARCH
A. Identify and submit applications to appropriate funding sources for support of the
division's expansion.
B. Assist with SIU School of Medicine's annual application to the Illinois Department of
Public Health Genetic Counseling Grant.
C. Develop clinical and research data for publication and presentation.
D. Contribute to Illinois Department of Public Health databases (genetic counseling and
APORS) for the collection of demographic and diagnostic information on genetics
patients.
E. Contribute, as needed, to hereditary cancer research efforts.

TEACHING
A. Participate in clinical and didactic education of medical students and residents as
needed.
B. Participate in continuing education programs in genetics for clinical faculty, area
physicians and community members.
C. Serve as a mentor for college students interesting in pursuing a career in genetic
counseling.
D. Serve as clinical supervisor to genetic counseling graduate students as requested by
graduate programs.
 Qualifications
* Master's degree in Genetic Counseling from an accredited program at start date and
* Board Eligible for Certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (State of
Illinois genetic counseling license will be required once board certification is obtained)
* Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations
