Job Description

Small Molecular Therapeutics and Platform Technologies (SMTPT) within Discovery Research seeks an accomplished scientist to lead a team of medicinal chemists within the Global Medicinal Chemistry (GMEC) organization in the Centralized Organic Synthesis Group (COSG). The COSG works with medicinal chemistry project teams to address key synthetic chemistry challenges and enable accelerated access to new routes, chemistry technologies, and intermediates. As a Senior Scientist I, the ideal candidate will conceive and execute synthetic organic chemistry research and development that achieves medicinal chemistry project and area goals, including scale up of advanced intermediates and API to support late-stage studies. Collaborative and cross-functional communication with both medicinal chemistry and process chemistry teams is essential to help facilitate subsequent technology transfer of routes and chemical processes.

The ideal candidate will also have experience with large-scale purification and crystallization, execution of multi-step synthetic routes, and delivery of high-purity final compounds and API suitable for advanced preclinical studies. The candidate will also demonstrate safe execution of chemical processes on scale and efficient balance of speed and precision in daily efforts to help fuel medicinal chemistry SAR studies and lead compound characterization. The Senior Scientist I should have an exceptional “results-oriented” and “can-do” work ethic and be willing and able to work collaboratively in a matrixed environment.

Key responsibilities:

+ Build strong relationships with peers and cross functionally with partners outside of teams to enable higher performance.

+ Conceive and implement novel experimental approaches to answer scientific questions. Investigate, identify, develop, and optimize new methods and techniques

+ Highly autonomous and productive in performing laboratory research or method development, requiring only minimal direction from or interaction with supervisor.

+ Demonstrates proficiency across a range of relevant technologies.

+ Maintain a high level of productivity in the lab and/or pilot plant.

+ Route development and scale up of key intermediates and API for medicinal chemistry programs

+ Clear and prompt communication of results to direct and cross-functional teams

+ Publish and present work in peer-reviewed journals and/or scientific conferences

Qualifications

Qualifications:

+ PhD in Organic Chemistry or related field or MS in Chemistry with typically 8+ or BS in Chemistry with typically 10+ years of industry experience. Pharmaceutical industry experience desirable.

+ Possesses theoretical and practical understanding of own scientific discipline.

+ Demonstrated ability to learn, understand and master new experimental techniques.

+ Ability to multitask and work within timelines.

+ Past experience in medicinal chemistry and/or process chemistry roles beneficial; scale up experience mandatory

+ Must have a “results-oriented” work ethic and a positive “can-do” attitude with a strong sense of urgency and self-motivated desire to achieve
