WIC Breast Feeding Peer Counselor

Southern Seven Health Department is seeking applications for a regular, part-time (10 hours per week) position that is based at the Massac County Public Health Clinic in Metropolis, Illinois. The base office location is flexible depending upon where the candidate resides. This position is a paraprofessional support person who gives basic breastfeeding information in scope of their practice and encouragement to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.

Qualifications:  The applicant must have at least a High School Diploma or GED; must have breastfed at least one baby (does NOT have to be currently breastfeeding) and must be enthusiastic about breastfeeding and wants to help other moms enjoy a positive experience.

Job Duties:

  • Receives a caseload of WIC mothers (clients) and makes routine periodic contacts.
  • Provides basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers including: telling them about the benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers, preventing and handling common breastfeeding concerns, and getting a good start with breastfeeding.
  • Talks with WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers by telephone, texting (on agency provided cell phone), and face to face visits in the clinic settings.
  • Is available outside the WIC Clinic and the usual 8:30 4:30 working schedule to new mothers who are having breastfeeding problems this is counted as work time.
  • Works directly with clients (mother to mother) in obtaining information and follow-up visits.
  • Completes required client records and maintains security, accuracy, and completeness of written records and electronic databases.
  • Seeks input from Supervisor when dealing with unusual situations.
  • Refers mothers according to clinic-established protocols.
  • Follows all policies and procedures related to confidentiality and HIPAA regulations.
  • Performs other duties as requested or assigned to meet the requirements of the agency.
