Masters Intern - Cementitious Wasteform Modeling

at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Springfield, Illinois, United States

Job Description

Overview

At a time when complex environmental problems are emerging on every front, the Nuclear Sciences Division’s staff, capabilities, and facilities are delivering science and technology innovations for the environment, as well as for energy and national security needs. Our diverse work addresses a wide range of national and international challenges, from providing solutions that protect the health of people who must work in hazardous environments, to developing durable new materials, streamlining industrial processes for improved productivity and effectiveness, and delivering new approaches for environmental cleanup. Nuclear Sciences Division capabilities and efforts are focused in three key areas including Environmental Health and Remediation, Nuclear Regulatory, and Nuclear Energy.

Responsibilities

The Nuclear Sciences Division within the Energy and Environment Directorate at PNNL is currently seeking a current engineering student to join its Radiological Materials (RM) group as Master’s Intern. The RM group develops waste forms, focusing on nuclear waste immobilization and long-term waste form performance modeling. Cementitious characterization data to be gathered, cataloged, and used for a predictive modeling tool with respect to formulation, processing and final waste form properties will include rheology, calorimetry, ultrasound wave reflection techniques, chemical leaching studies, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and optical microscopy. The successful candidate will utilize data generated by our laboratory personnel to model long-term performance of cementitious waste forms using current and emerging reactive transport models. The successful candidate will be an integral member of an inter-disciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and technicians to primarily help and plan the testing of various nuclear waste form materials (e.g., cements, glass, ceramics) or in the chemical treatment of nuclear wastes or other complex systems.

We are seeking an individual who is versatile, motivated and a self-starter who can work in a highly dynamic team environment. The successful candidate must have excellent communication skills and be able to rapidly learn new models and programming skills. The position requires a highly responsible individual with extreme attention to detail that will be able to develop solutions to problems.
