Summary The Jesse Brown VA Medical Center has an opening for a Registered Nurse – Operating Room / Implant Coordinator / Scheduling position within the Perioperative Service. The Registered Nurse – Operating Room (OR) is accountable for patient outcomes resulting from the nursing care for the patient undergoing a surgical/ invasive procedure. The position requires cross training and cross coverage as implant coordinator and surgical scheduler. This announcement has been extended through 7/22/2024. Responsibilities The perioperative OR RN plans, directs and coordinates the care of every patient undergoing operative and other invasive procedures, taking into consideration respect for the individual and recognition of the important contribution that each team member makes to the patient’s well-being. This OR RN is expected to function proficiently in both the circulator and scrub role within the OR and to be competent in all surgical specialties served. The OR RN maintains knowledge of current Association of peri-Operative Registered Nurses (AORN) Standards, VHA Directives, and service level standard operating procedures. The OR RN assures the sterility of the surgical field is maintained and all instrumentation and equipment in play is used in a safe and efficient manner. The OR RN protects the patient from injury caused by chemical, electrical, mechanical, and thermal sources, and extraneous objects, performs counting procedures to protect the patient from unintended retained surgical items, participates in the Time Out process to ensure correct site, side, and level, and follow implant and tissue/tissue-based product documentation, policy, and procedures. The OR RN is responsible for ensuring comprehensive documentation of all care provided during the perioperative experience is timely, complete, and accurate in the electronic health record. Additionally, this RN will be responsible for the overall management and oversight of implant and tissue inventory, stocking, supply, and implant and tissue program for the entire facility. Coordinating all aspects of implant management by working with Supply Chain Management (SCM), Prosthetic and Sensory Aid Service (PSAS), Sterile Processing Service (SPS), the Contracting Officer (CO), and other clinical areas using implants. The Implant Coordinator assists respective clinical services in developing all requirements and documents needed for consignment agreements. Reporting any known issues with consigned inventory, such as expired implants or inadequate inventory levels. Monitoring the processing of PSAS consults to ensure the timely procurement of needed implants and/or the payment for or replacement of used implants The OR RN Scheduler is responsible for creating a daily surgical procedure schedule by collaborating with the multidisciplinary perioperative team. Responsibilities include, but not limited to: Communicate and interact appropriately and courteously with internal and external customers, maintain confidentiality of patient/employee information electronically, verbally, and written, be an active participant in department process improvement, collaborates with multidisciplinary surgical team members to improve scheduling processes, coordinates multiple internal and external phases of development of the master surgery schedule times based on historical case statistics; selects appropriate OR for surgical procedures, based upon case complexity, equipment usage, technology needs, patient safety, and surgeon preference. Qualifications Basic Requirements: English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE); OR Individuals attending a master’s level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor’s level degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program. Upon achievement of a State license, the individual may be appointed on temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6); OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing to warrant an appointment as a Nurse who has completed an associated degree/entry level Nursing education program. Credit for foreign nursing education higher that associate degree/entry level requires a formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized equivalency evaluation accepted by VA such as International Consultants of Delaware (ICD). Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception: Candidates who otherwise meet the basic education requirements, but do not possess the required licensure, may be appointed at the entry step of the grade and level applicable to the completed nursing education as a GNT on a 120-day temporary appointment while actively pursuing licensure (may be extended up to two years on a case-by-case-basis.)
