The Building Simulation & Design Group is looking for a mid-level research analyst (Research Analyst 3) with expertise in building energy codes, a passion for energy efficiency and pursuit of innovative solutions, and a desire to work as part of a collaborative team solving national challenges in buildings research and policy.

Responsibilities

The analyst will support PNNL’s Building Energy Codes Program in its role to provide direct technical assistance, education and training, and resources to state and local jurisdictions in support of energy code adoption and implementation. The analyst will gather, analyze, and evaluate information on building energy code policies and technical research underway to modify existing codes. They will engage with external stakeholders in the building energy codes community, such as codes development committees, building designers, construction industry representatives, state and local policy makers, and others to understand their needs and communicate the technical basis for proposed code changes. The analyst will anticipate U.S. Department of Energy sponsor’s challenges and recommend operational and policy improvements to enhance the Building Energy Codes Program. Candidates are expected to utilize their knowledge and expertise in innovative technologies for building energy efficiency, energy performance metrics and data analysis, and policy analysis to help track the status of existing codes, proposed changes, and work with teams of building energy simulation and other research engineers to establish and communicate their impacts. The ideal candidate will have a strong communication skills, a working knowledge of building energy codes, sustainable building design and operating principles, and a strong interest in research and development.

Specific responsibilities will include:

+ Develops solutions to a variety of complex problems based on established precedent or policy.

+ Serves as an independent contributor. Fully functioning, fully knowledgeable of theory, principles and practices.

+ Identifies opportunities and risks and makes recommendations affecting organizational objectives. Exerts some influence on the overall objectives and long-range goals of the organization.

+ May work on discrete pieces of larger projects or simultaneously with different sponsors and external stakeholders or on different projects of moderate scope and complexity, risk or impact. May serve as task leader to support project execution.

+ Works independently with little oversight required. Provides mentoring to other staff. Seeks out collaborative opportunities.

+ Contributes to the development of technical products, such as project reports or presentations at technical forums.

The successful candidate will be accountable to:

+ Project and/or Task Managers for performing assigned roles, following applicable project and field procedures, and completing assigned tasks on time and within budget;

+ The Buildings & Connected Systems Group Leader, and Building Simulation Team Leader, for general staff performance and development, operational discipline (e.g., maintaining training qualifications, procedural compliance, safe operations), and project execution.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

+ BS/BA and 5 years of relevant experience OR

+ MS/MA or higher and 3 years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

+ A Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, sustainable design, and/or policy.

+ Experience analyzing building energy codes, building performance data, and the impacts of building system upgrades and code changes on building performance.

+ Excellent verbal communication and technical writing skills, with a demonstrated ability for conveying complex concepts concisely and clearly.

+ Strong project or task management experience with budgeting, planning, and control of cost, schedules and deliverables.

+ A collaborative approach to problem-solving and the ability to work well with inter-disciplinary teams.

+ Experience in facilitating an energy code education and training program or directly educating stakeholders on building energy code fundamentals and requirements.
