Job Description

The technologist is responsible for performing Gross dissection and description of small surgical specimens, assist pathologists and pathologists’ assistants in preparing larger tissue specimens, perform frozen sectioning and slide staining to aid physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.

Prepare gynecological (GYN), liquid-based (Pap) slides from SurePath TM vials, stain conventional pap smears and apply coverslips to stained slides. Centrifuge and transfer liquid-based Pap specimens for subsequent High-Risk Human Papillomavirus (HR HPV) testing and genotyping. Support Cytotechnologist with slide staining on FNA procedures during EUS/EBUS adequacy procedures.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences required.

Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Required to participate in an on call rotation with a 30 minute response time to the gross room.

Experience:

+ Medical laboratory experience preferred.

+ Good verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

+ Participate in an on call rotation with a 30 minute response time to or scheduled Saturday rotation as required.

+ Basic computer skills, preferably with knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

+ Moderate physical effort.

+ Log specimens in LIS, retrieve surgical number, and charge for procedures performed.

+ Utilize knowledge of anatomy to accession specimens in LIS using the appropriate part types.

+ Assist pathologists with preparation of frozen sections by performing microtomy using a cryostat.

+ Dictate gross descriptions on small/uncomplicated surgical specimens.

+ Prepare surgical and autopsy material for processing on VIP tissue processor.

+ Selects the most suitable and appropriate specimen processing technique to optimally preparing cytologic smears, Cyto-centrifuges, cell blocks and/or other preparations as outlined in the department procedure manual.

+ Appropriately stain prepared labeled slides using established laboratory procedures via the automated robotic slide stainer or manual techniques when applicable and apply cover glass to stained slides.

+ Label and prepare gynecologic liquid-based cytology slide preparations from SurePath TM vials utilizing the BD Totalys slide processor system.

+ Maintains competency in the routine use and maintenance of laboratory instrumentation including but not limited to Tissue Processors, cryostats, centrifuges, robotic stainer, biologic safety cabinet, chemical fume hood, alcohol recycler and computer systems.

+ Completes all QA functions.

+ Procure tissues and related materials for SIU teaching.

+ Assist and prepare for laboratory inspections.

+ Record workload documentation.

+ Assist with the instruction of new employees.

+ Maintain quality assurance records.

+ Maintain hazardous waste manuals and MSDS sheets to comply with OSHA regulations.

+ Work with pathologists and Cytopathologists on related duties as necessary.

+ Print and reconcile pending specimen logs, applying specimen rejection procedures and documenting all appropriate quality assurance activities.

+ Maintains adequate stock of reagents and lab supplies. Receives and rotates stock. Appropriately disposes of expired reagents. Prepares and labels working solutions from stock reagents using established cytology laboratory procedures.

+ Follows established standards and practices related to safety, operation and procedure manuals including CLIA ’88, CAP, State and Federal compliance guidelines.

+ Files, retrieves and maintains slides and blocks from long-term original material storage according to established procedures, utilizing Arcos Database where appropriate.

+ Communicates effectively with department, laboratory, pathology and hospital staff as well as outreach clients, when applicable for specimen tracking, issue resolutions and slide/specimen transport.

+ Appropriately prepares specimens/slides for transport to the cytotechnologists or the main hospital laboratory for slide evaluation or additional processing.

+ On a rotation basis, provides support for FNA processes at main laboratory as well as slide monitoring and tracking to and from off-site cytology laboratory.

+ Supportive role with Cytotechnologist or cytopathologists in performing fine-needle aspiration adequacies.

+ Maintain and stay current on all related and assigned competencies and computer-based learning (CBL) modules.

+ Promote an attitude of teamwork and effective communication and rapport with the staff and management of Memorial Lab Services, Memorial Medical Center and Memorial Health Systems including its affiliates.

+ Maintain confidentiality of all information regarding patients according to hospital policy and federal HIPAA regulations.

+ Promote good customer service at all times.

+ Ensure that professional and personal activities conform to Memorial Medical Center’s strategic plan and Mission, Vision, and Values.

+ Perform other related work as required or requested.
