Engineering Consulting Tech Lead

Location: 100% Remote or based out of any ICF location. This opportunity is open only within the continental United States and will support both our Technical Advisory Services Director and Senior Director.

Our work is focused on enabling the development of and investment in energy infrastructure. Working within the Technical Advisory group, your role as our Engineering Consulting Tech Lead will include coordinating team members across the practice as we engage with clients, address challenges, and implement solutions related to the development, design, construction, operation, and analysis of energy projects. You will utilize your experience to lead and expand our Independent

Engineering and Owner’s Engineering advisory services for all sectors of the energy industry.

You will be joining a motivated and dedicated team of industry experts, with a rewarding team culture. The team delivers high-value technical diligence support though independent engineering assessments and offers solutions for owners and asset operators mitigating technical and commercial challenges. You will have an opportunity to work across a wide range of energy technologies (solar, wind, storage, hydrogen, biofuels, and conventional technologies) and engage with clients and industry stakeholders regarding the opportunities present in the evolving energy landscape.

What you will do

As the Engineering Consulting Tech Lead, you will be responsible for a combination of implementing strategy, team/staff management, and consulting work execution.

+ Supporting the Practice Lead in implementation of practice strategy.

+ Lead and collaborate with an exceptional team of 45 engineers and experts.

+ Stay current with energy industry trends, challenges, and changes and support strategy development for the team in line with market needs and opportunities.

+ Coordinate and collaborate with ICF business partners across recruiting, human resources, finance, and marketing to develop, monitor and execute effectively on internal processes and strategies to support organizational efficiency and business growth objectives.

+ Coordinate business development and client management, and project execution for renewable energy projects.

+ Support the Practice Lead in marketing and industry positioning, including recommending and managing conference budget and coordinating support with ICF corporate marketing team.

+ Oversee consistency in contract set-ups, subcontracts, invoicing, and serve as a resource to the team to address operational challenges within the team.

+ Team/staff management and engagement

+ Review and refine approach, structures, and processes to support staff development, recruiting, and retention including on-boarding, training, and mentoring to deliver best-in-class technical advisory services and growth opportunities for the team.

+ Manage resource planning and tracking, review of financials, monthly forecasting, and annual planning. Monitoring and support managers to achieve the utilization goals for their team.

+ Develop plans for expansion of the team, evolution of roles, mentoring and/or managing junior engineers.

+ Find opportunities and approaches for effective coordination and collaboration with other teams within ICF to provide for more comprehensive client solutioning as well as growth and diversity of work opportunities for staff.

+ Foster a close-knit team environment with a diverse team with a range of technical abilities and knowledge levels.

+ Selective execution on consulting services and business development:

+ Serve as a project manager occasionally, as well as development and review of due diligence reports for renewable energy assets, as well as other energy technologies.

+ Review technical aspects of related to renewable energy assets both in development and operation – with a willingness to support the team with siting feasibility, contracts review, technology evaluation, design review, and pro forma review.

+ Lead and/or contribute to technical and cost proposal development.

+ Support business development efforts including client discussions as a technical expert, and marketing, and thought leadership to external audiences.

Minimum Qualifications

+ Bachelor’s degree in engineering (e.g. – civil, structural, electrical, mechanical)

+ 10+ years of professional experience in the renewable energy industry

+ 3+ years working as a consultant providing independent engineering and/or owner’s advisory services.

+ 5+ years of supervisory experience, managing others.

+ 5+ years of experience with project financing due diligence, including relationship with developers, investors, financing institutions, and banks.

Preferred Skills/Experience

+ Responsibility for growing and managing a team, including business strategy development and execution.

+ Experience with managing and reporting on P&L for a practice area.

+ General working knowledge of structure and requirements for key commercial contracts required for project development (interconnection, offtake, equipment supply, construction, and operations and maintenance)

Personal Traits/Experience

+ Excited to support a dynamic, growing consulting practice, and comfortable wearing “multiple hats” and working with a “start-up feel” to support a growing practice.

+ A desire to work in a fast-paced, diverse team environment and can organize and prioritize workstreams and clients.

+ Ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively to lead and develop a team and practice area with minimal guidance.

+ Passion for the energy industry and solving complex problems.

+ Strong intellectual curiosity and enthusiasm to learn beyond what is required for daily tasks.
