The Opportunity

This position works out of our Chicago location in the Rapid Diagnostics Division.

As the Director, Medical & Scientific Affairs, Infectious Disease, you will help lead the Infectious Disease Emerging Market Medical Affairs organization that supports our business with global partners and each distinct region/area (for example, Americas, EMEA or APAC). This position will oversee and generate the strategy and the implementation of medical education, medical customer engagement, health advocacy, making sure that global and regional activities are aligned with the global strategy.

What You’ll Work On

In partnership with other cross-functional team members the Director, Medical & Scientific Affairs is responsible for delivering the scientific information to support the strategic objectives of the franchise. The Medical Director has the authority to represent Abbott Laboratories as a therapeutic area scientific expert on marketed products and to ensure adequate and accurate clinical data is presented in formal and informal presentations. The Medical Director acts autonomously in partnering with the upstream and regional Medical and Scientific Affairs team to implement programs that support the marketing of Abbott products.

The candidate should have the ability to convey complex medical and scientific information to professional audiences including key opinion leaders and Abbott advisors in both oral and written formats.

+ This will include presentation of clinical data as well as therapeutic area specific updates.

+ Responsible for scientific review of investigator-initiated studies and in collaboration with Clinical Scientists.

+ Drives the development, submission and execution of Investigator Initiated Studies to ensure completion and publication of studies.

+ Provides support for organizing and conducting national and international advisory meetings and symposia. This includes responsibility for developing presentations, whitepapers and peer-reviewed articles.

+ Assist the commercial organization with the development of therapeutic area specific medical education programs and marketing materials.

+ Develop original publications with goal to publish in peer reviewed format.

+ Assist in developing/mentoring members in global Medical and Clinical Affairs and the commercial team with respect to therapeutic area scientific information.

+ May also develop and mentor Regional Medical scientists/employees to execute strategic business initiatives.

+ May lead cross-functional teams in development and execution of strategic medical initiatives within therapeutic area.

+ The Medical Director interacts regularly and builds relationships with key opinion leaders, investigators and policy makers

+ The Medical Director also interacts very closely with global marketing and market access teams to establish clinical and scientific communication strategies to support the marketing of Abbott products.

Required Qualifications

+ Bachelors, Masters or PhD degree required in a scientific or medical discipline or similar. M.D. or D.O. equivalent is preferred.

+ A minimum of 6 years of industry or patient care experience in therapeutic area is required.

Preferred Qualifications

+ M.D. or D.O. equivalent is preferred.

+ Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) may be considered.

+ Scientific credibility with internal and external groups; must convey complex scientific and clinical information to wide variety of audiences. Interacts frequently with key Therapeutic area experts (M.D.). Th candidate should also have strong clinical background/understanding of design, review and execution of clinical studies.

+ The Medical Director must utilize problem solving skills in order to develop and execute Abbott scientific programs .

+ Must demonstrate aptitude for learning, technical and professional expertise.

+ Ability to maintain up to date disease state scientific knowledge by keeping abreast of latest clinical studies and protocols as they relate Abbott portfolio.

+ Transfer knowledge to wide array of audiences. Must structure clinical presentations with fair balance and scientific rigor.

The base pay for this position is $136,000.00 – $272,000.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
