Hazardous Materials Specialist

Location: Schaumburg, IL

Job type: Direct hire

Schedule: M-F; 8AM-5PM

Salary: $75,000 – $100,000 (Depending on experience)

As a Hazardous Materials Specialist you will focus on safe handling of dangerous goods and ensuring compliance with all local, state, federal regulatory agencies, as well as company policies and procedures. In this role, you will also be responsible for performing a blend of complex technical responsibilities across hazardous material programs; this includes tracking, maintaining chemical inventory, preparing hazardous material reports, and ensuring compliance with hazardous material storage across several facilities.

Responsibilities

+ Support chemical approval process using established procedures, ensures efficient review and classification of new and existing products to ensure proper storage, preparation, and shipping, following all applicable laws & regulations (i.e., TSCA, DEA, Canada Precursor B).

+ Support maintenance of existing SDS electronic system.

+ Develop, track, and report environmental metrics related to hazardous materials to management.

+ Track purchases and sales related to chemicals or hazardous materials, ensuring required reporting is completed: this includes, but is not limited to the required reporting related to importing and exporting.

+ Review and revise documentation and train personnel to ensure all shipments have proper marking, labeling and placarding and are compliant with appropriate regulations and laws, including 49 CFR, IATA, IMDG, HMIS, TSCA, NFPA, OSHA GHS, etc.

+ Provide oversight for and ensure processes, procedures, and training for managing the return of dangerous goods, and partners with stakeholders to oversee the returned material management process.

+ In close partnership with the local distribution center leadership, oversees aged inventory review and management process, first triage point for hazardous materials spills, and acts as a subject matter expert to team members and customers.

+ Assist in planning for changes in physical facilities; reviewing new or modified equipment to meet regulatory, and company requirements.

Qualifications

+ Minimum of 5+ years of experience supporting hazardous material programs.

+ Ability to classify hazardous materials in relation to 40 CFR definitions.

+ Previous experience preparing air permitting, chemical inventory reporting, hazardous waste, SPCC and spill contingency planning.

+ Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), or willingness to obtain.

+ Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, Environmental Engineering, Occupational Safety, Health & Industrial Engineering, or related experience is required.

+ Master’s degree is a plus.

+ Knowledge of federal, state, local and international environment, health, and safety regulations.

+ Willing to travel up to 60%.

+ Proficient in MS Office programs.

+ Experience with Adobe Creative Suite.

+ Able to learn internal software systems and database.

+ Experience with basic HTML is a plus.
