Job Description

Duties: Rush University Medical Center seeks a Respiratory Therapist (Multiple Positions Open) in Chicago, IL to provide medical care, assessment, and consultative services to improve and maintain patient cardiopulmonary conditions using medications, gases, respiratory devices, and other therapeutic procedures. Manage the airway by initiating, monitoring, weaning mechanical ventilation, and making recommendations based on clinical assessment, technical assessment, and laboratory values. Train and guide new employees and students and serve as team leader in critical care units. Clinically assess patients before, during, and after treatment. Provide charge therapist duties including assigning and reassigning workload for staff, updating department information management systems during shifts, and preparing workload assignments for the next shift. Provide clinical precepting of respiratory care students on rotation and provide feedback to the leadership team. Perform bedside spirometry (pulmonary function tests), including spontaneous breathing parameters, Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (PEFR) tests, and other limited pulmonary functions to identify the normal value for patients. Administer bronchial hygiene and treatment procedures including aerosol therapies, chest physical therapy, and therapeutic gas administration. Analyze gases where applicable; procure and deliver gases using central piping systems and gas cylinders. Recommend appropriate therapy including initial therapy, changes in therapy and discontinuance of therapy. Apply Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) and Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP) and make recommendations based on patient compliance, response, and laboratory values. Assess patient oxygenation, ventilation, and hemodynamic status through clinical observation, patient assessment, physiologic monitoring including oximetry, capnography, ventilator waveform analysis, cardiac output, Electrocardiogram (ECG), and laboratory values. Participate in physician rounds and document assessment findings and therapy changes. Provide patient and family education. Perform bronchoscopy in adult patients. Assist in completing staff orientation competencies. Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) and Quality Assurance (QA) initiatives, including work audits and committee participating. 

 

Minimum Requirements: Position requires Bachelor’s degree in Respiratory Care or a related field plus 2 years of experience in Respiratory Therapy. 2 years of experience must include 2 years of the following: 1) Providing Respiratory medical care related to patient cardiopulmonary conditions; 2) Performing bedside spirometry and other breathing parameter testing; 3) Assessing and recommending Respiratory Care diagnosis and therapies; 4) Applying CPAP, BiPAP. Must also have a valid Illinois Respiratory Care Practitioner License and a valid Respiratory Therapist Registration or RRT.
