The Opportunity

This position works out of our Lake Forest, IL location in the Core Diagnostic Division. Our diagnostic solutions are used in hospitals, laboratories, and clinics around the globe. The crucial information derived from our tests, instruments and informatics systems are often the first step in patient care decision making for hundreds of health conditions from heart attacks to blood disorders to infectious diseases and cancers.

As the Capital Planning, Program Manager , you’ll be responsible for the planning support of mid-large scale capital projects and will support delivery to the Division capital portfolio. This position will work regularly with different Manufacturing sites, Finance, Accounting, Engineering, R&D, Commercial, Quality, and other functions to ensure alignment of the Capital Plan to Business strategy and execution to Plan.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

+ Represent the Capital Planning and Core Operations team as primary point of contact for initiatives and programs surrounding capital planning, interacting with key stakeholders to ensure that project objectives, schedules, and deliverables are established and met.

+ Drive the preparation and review process for “right first time” multiple, diverse, and global Request for Capital Expenditures (RCEs), including supporting summary documents and critical milestones. Holds responsibility as the first gate keeper in the review process for large RCEs.

+ Review all documents related to each RCE for data accuracy, errors, consistency, and interacts and communicates with different levels of the organization to ensure timely review and approval of capital requests to support business needs.

+ Assures project quality by using standard development methodologies and by working with Corporate Global Eng. services.

+ Consults with key stakeholders to develop project requirements; tracks performance to project plans and executes on final project delivery.

+ Estimates Capital project levels of effort and resource requirements by using standard estimating techniques and tools, and by working with appropriate staff to understand scope of effort for Front End Planning (FEP) process.

+ Drive the process of tracking and trending of capital related metrics within the capital planning group.

+ Assures project quality by using standard development methodologies and by working with Corporate Global Eng. services.

+ Develops and identifies “Best Practices” in the area of capital planning and works to train/implement across Core Diagnostics capital project teams with the process improvement program.

+ Consults with internal capital and program management groups, leveraging and sharing best-practices knowledge to continuously improve the process and assisting in capital management processes and techniques.

+ Support process plan for global Asset Management Life Cycle program as a feed into the manufacturing Site Master Plans and the LRP (Long Range Planning) process.

+ Support project closure process and asset lifecycle management as the business needs.

+ Must have proven ability to participate in team atmosphere, exhibit and create a sense of appropriate urgency and maintain working relationships, with demonstrated ability to effectively communicate to leadership.

+ Work collaboratively with Finance, PMO, Engineering and Manufacturing Leadership and other Functional Leads.

+ Adapts to changing business strategies and evolves capital asset planning accordingly.

+ Effectively communicate and coordinate to ensure expectations of all RCE documents are met for quality, constancy, and timeliness.

+ Exercises judgment independently.

+ Coordinate input from multiple areas or multiple project managers on related projects.

+ Develop project objectives and strategies, develop timelines and milestones. Utilize project scheduling software to plan and track projects. Develop design and development plan.

+ Identify resource requirements, cost, and time schedules. Develop an implementation plan, conduct risk assessments, and develop contingency plans to accommodate unforeseen events.

+ Translate project goals into project tasks. Define the nature of the stated business or technical problem.

+ Anticipate future problems, resolve current issues, and adjust based on prior results.

Required Qualifications

+ Bachelors Degree, discipline appropriate to the project.

+ Minimum 3 years experience in project management. Recognized technical skills and judgment appropriate to the project discipline. Basic working knowledge of project management tools and processes.

+ Knowledge of regulations and standards affecting IVDs and Biologics.

Preferred Qualifications

+ Bachelor’s degree in an engineering, scientific or technical area with 3-5 years of experience in an area related to the project.

+ A minimum of 5 years experience in manufacturing operations or quality systems with a thorough understanding of Abbott internal systems and procedures.

+ Has led at least 1 significant project from beginning to end.

+ Recognized technical and project management skills appropriate to the project. Technical experience and demonstrated competence in multiple areas of responsibility (e.g., functional areas, sites, divisions).

+ Demonstrated diplomacy and effective functioning in a matrix environment.

+ Working up-to-date knowledge of quality system regulations, ISO 9000 requirements and corporate policies, standards, and requirements.

+ Bachelor’s degree in a discipline appropriate to the project environment with minimum five years relevant experience, one year of which must be in leadership/project management roles.

+ Experience working in high-volume manufacturing, preferably in medical device, diagnostics, or regulated industry

+ Experience with project management and working with complex financial information.

+ Strong project experience and an ability to influence others is essential.

+ Have a strong manufacturing and financial background, including experience in manufacturing and equipment capital projects.
