Performs echocardiographic procedures to assist in the diagnosis of heart disease according to established standards. Has the ability to recognize normal and abnormal characteristics of rare and complex congenital and acquired cardiovascular abnormalities in a variety of settings. Understands and integrates into the delivery of patient care the needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent and adult patients in regards to their growth and development process. The position actively supports the Hospital's and Department's Continuous Quality Improvement and customer service goals, individually and as an effective team member.

Job Description
Essential Job Functions:
1. Performs echocardiographic studies within the complete spectrum of diagnoses seen in congenital and pediatric heart disease, as well as adult echocardiography, with minimal supervision. The sonographer must demonstrate the ability to continuously integrate the image and Doppler data to be able to evaluate unusual findings, particularly with respect to congenital heart disease, so that a complete diagnostic study can be obtained. This requires that the sonographer have an extensive understanding of congenital and unusual forms of non-congenital heart disease.
2. Performs advanced imaging including strain and 3D.
3. Demonstrates the clinical judgment to recognize and triage an emergent situation appropriately, such as calling for immediate review before study completion.
4. Demonstrates competency with all aspects of the ultrasound equipment, with the ability to obtain optimal imaging and Doppler data and perform complete data analysis. The sonographer must be familiar with the use of all possible acoustic windows and be comfortable dealing with technically difficult studies whether due to lack of patient cooperation or difficult access.
5. Must be knowledgeable and experienced with ECMO procedure, to assist with bedside ECMO weens and catheter placement.
6. Performs stress echocardiograms.
7. Performs the technical components of transesophageal, intracardiac echocardiography or other special procedures.
8. Supervises and teaches other sonographers and pediatric cardiology fellows.
9. Provides written communication for use by divisional cardiologists only, with the understanding that this does not constitute an official report.
10. Demonstrates knowledge of pertinent aspects and competency with protocols related to the use of chemical disinfection, high level disinfection, and sterilization if required as part of the responsibilities of the role.
11. Participates in outreach and on call duties.
12. On a rotating basis, is responsible for assigned duties.
13. Participates in lab maintenance job rotations as assigned.
14. Participates in lab teaching, operational and quality assurance meetings.
15. Participates in national conferences and IAC meetings.
16. Participates in the logging and billing of procedures
17. Participates in research projects as assigned.

Additional job duties if in role of Research Cardiac Sonographer:
1. Perform pediatric cardiovascular 2D, m-mode and Doppler studies for research protocols.
2. Help physicians edit and prepare research samples for presentations, conferences, and lectures.
3. Assist with coordination and scheduling of research echoes.
4. Enter echo data in study spreadsheet.
5. Provide copies of research echoes and coordinate data pick-up with research coordinator.
6. Responsible for administrative tracking of progress in all research protocols.
7. Communicates issues related to echo research with the Medical Director.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. Registered as ARDMS and/or CCI cardiac sonographer in Pediatric Echocardiography, with the equivalent of 3 years full-time pediatric clinical experience. Grandfather status to current incumbents. Registry in Adult Echocardiography advantageous but not required. If CCI registered, ARDMS certification is expected to be obtained in the first year of employment.
2. Basic Life Support Certification required.
3. Ability to maneuver a 450-pound ultrasound machine throughout the hospital.
4. Ability to effectively communicate with hospital/department staff and parents/patients.
5. Ability to travel to outreach sites and provide 24-hour on-call coverage is required.
