The Senior Packaging Engineer is responsible for designing, testing, and the overall implementation of product packaging that are an integral part of Leica Biosystems Product Development process. They also review and improve existing packaging designs.

This individual develops, designs, and tests standards and guidelines for developing packaging solutions. They work with internal resources and packaging suppliers to achieve functional packaging goals.

Job Responsibilities

+ Design and develop container and packaging for Core Histology Consumable products, including the creation of packaging designs, prototype development, and performance testing.

+ Troubleshoot and problem-solve new and existing packaging issues/complaints/problems involving designs, materials and processes and provide creative, timely, and cost-effective solutions.

+ Analyze engineering drawings and specifications of product to determine physical characteristics of item, special handling, environmental and safety requirements, and types of materials required for packaging.

+ Develop and implement comprehensive test plans to ensure that packaging systems and components exceeds customer specifications for new and existing products.

+ Establish standards and guidelines for supplier evaluation. Evaluate and select packaging suppliers/vendors; periodically conduct vendor reviews.

+ Maintain quality standards of FDA, ISO, GLP and GMP.

+ Prepare technical work instructions as required for review and approval.

+ Participate in design change and manufacturing cost improvement initiatives.

+ Must be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

+ Work closely with global suppliers, test laboratories, engineering, product management, operations, and sourcing to ensure that the packaging designs are optimized for manufacturability.

Education/ Qualifications/ Skills:

+ A bachelor’s degree in packaging or mechanical engineering with packaging/container design experience and a minimum of 5 years of industry experience in a production or R&D environment.

+ Knowledge and understanding of packaging design validation and transportation standards (UN, ISTA, ISO, ASTM, etc.). Knowledge of shipping dangerous goods is a plus.

+ Knowledge and understanding of drafting and specification standards. Demonstrable proficiency in 3D CAD software (Creo or SolidWorks).

+ Extensive knowledge of packaging material and design.

+ Experience in preparation of controlled studies, protocols, statistical analysis, and report writing.

Preferred experience/Skills:

+ Six Sigma Green Belt; Black Belt a plus.

+ Familiarity with product life cycle management strategies.

+ Experience leading cross-functional teams from design through design transfer of new medical device products.
