The Coastal Sciences Division, headquartered at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s Sequim Marine Research Operations on Washington State’s Olympic Peninsula, is the Department of Energy’s only marine research laboratory. This unique facility and the capabilities of its researchers deliver science and technology that is critical to the nation’s energy, environmental and security future.
Building upon a history of research related to marine and coastal resources, environmental chemistry, water resources modeling, ecotoxicology and biotechnology-and more recently, national and homeland security-the PNNL-Sequim campus is emerging as a leader in these three areas:
+ Enabling sustainable development of ocean energy
+ Understanding and mitigating long-term impacts of human activities, including climate change, on marine resources
+ Protecting coastal environments from security threats
Responsibilities
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is a leader in offshore wind energy research, managing the development of capabilities and technologies needed to advance the nation’s wind energy systems and address wind energy market and deployment barriers. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s offshore wind capabilities in wind resource characterization, environmental monitoring and wind/wildlife impacts, wind systems integration, community values and ocean co-use, and data management can support offshore wind research partners in addressing some of the biggest challenges facing offshore wind development in the United States.
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is seeking to hire a highly qualified ocean engineer to support our expanding offshore wind portfolio. The individual is expected to:
+ Build their reputation through application of science and engineering principles and theories and develop technical approaches to solve challenges.
+ Build networks at a local and capability level.
+ Effectively team to share resources and optimize research at the group and division level.
+ Mentoring junior staff and students.
+ Receive guidance on new assignments, make preliminary selections on technical alternatives; independently complete recurring assignments.
+ Define and lead project work at the task/project level, reporting results on time and on budget.
+ Contribute to proposals.
+ Embrace expectations for quality, safety, and security.
+ Communicate the importance within the work team.
+ Participate in the external professional community.
+ Present at national or international forums.
+ Lead elements or sections of technical products.
Specific job responsibilities include:
+ Propose, develop, and implement research projects associated with offshore wind energy development in collaboration with a team of interdisciplinary scientists and engineers.
+ Select and develop approaches on assignments related to the development of renewable ocean energy and advanced marine technology.
+ Perform statistical analysis of field data for the purposes of quality assurance.
+ Document project results through technical reports and publications.
+ Develop proposals and lead scoping, scheduling, and budgeting at a project or major task level.
+ Manage subcontracts, including developing statements of work, evaluating subcontracting risk, interfacing with vendors and subcontractors, managing subcontracted scope, schedule, and budget, reviewing deliverables, and approving invoices.
+ Interface routinely with project sponsor(s) to communicate project status, challenges, and successes and deliver milestones
+ Expand networks and reputation externally, particularly with offshore wind regulators, researchers, developers, consultants, and advocacy groups.
+ Disseminate appropriate information and project results through various means of communication, including presentations, reports, and media.
+ Establish a role in the technical/professional community including professional societies, offshore wind committees and working groups, other laboratories, academia, and industry.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
+ BS/BA and 2 years of relevant experience OR
+ MS/MA OR
+ PhD
Preferred Qualifications:
+ U.S. offshore wind regulatory and/or direct industry experience is preferred.
+ Technical expertise related to the deployment, operation, and maintenance of ocean buoys and marine technology.
+ Management expertise related to marine operations and logistical planning is preferred.
