JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
PARALEGAL II - LABOR
DEPARTMENT OF LAW
Number of Positions: 1
Starting Salary: $52,956.00
*This posting has been extended through May 22, 2023.
Under supervision, functions at the senior level providing paraprofessional legal and administrative support to attorneys in the Labor and Employment Litigation Divisions of the Law Department, and performs related duties as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Contacts various department liaisons and employees to collect and send information and documents as well as arranges for appearance at prep sessions, depositions, hearings, and arbitrations
Forwards Discrimination charges to various departments and collects applicable documentation from the Department of Human Resources
Acts as liaison between Labor and Employment Litigation to advise of related files between divisions
Prepares documents for production by gathering, scanning, organizing, redacting and Bates labeling them
Redacts audio files for production
Downloads and uploads documents through various file sharing formats and programs including but not limited to One Drive and Dropbox
Acts as intermediary between City departments and outside counsel
Drafts subpoenas for Circuit Court, District Court, Human Resources Board, Police Board, arbitrations, and other Administrative Agencies and submits them for service
Drafts simple Court documents (ie: Motions, Appearances, Notices)
Files documents in Circuit Court, District Court, EEOC, IDHR and HRC
Downloads and organizes court filings
Organizes, labels, and prints out exhibits for depositions, hearings, and arbitrations
Assists attorneys with preparation for arbitrations, hearings, and trials
Attends witness interviews and takes notes
Abstracts depositions and hearing transcripts
Additional duties may be required for this position.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree and a paralegal certificate from a paralegal training program accredited by the American Bar Association, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
NOTE: A copy of your official transcripts, professional license, or training certificates will be required at the time of interview, if applicable.
NOTE: Applicants will be required to provide a writing sample before they come in for an interview.
Writing Sample Criteria
Applicants must submit a writing sample prior to their scheduled interviews. All writing samples submitted in consideration for employment must comply with the following criteria:
1. The sample may either be a professional project report, academic project report, an official communication related to a professional or academic project, or a work-related report or communication
2. The writing sample submitted must be no more than five (5) pages
3. The writing sample must be accompanied by a cover page explaining:
1. The sample's original purpose (e.g., a writing class, a professional project, a memorandum for an employer);
2. When (MM/DD/YYYY) and for whom the sample was written;
3. The extent of editing by any third party (if any)
4. If the writing sample is an excerpt from a larger document, identify that larger document and provide context, if necessary
If an applicant chooses to submit a writing sample containing confidential or privileged information, the applicant must identify the steps taken, (redactions, name changes, or consent from the client or employer) to preserve the confidential or privileged nature of the document.
Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:
Previous experience as a Paralegal
Previous experience in the field of litigation or labor law
Proficiency with indexing and organizing documents produced in discovery
Proficiency with preparing and filing documents with federal and state courts
SELECTION REQUIREMENTS
This position requires applicants to complete an interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position will be selected.
Residency Requirement: All employees of the City of Chicago must be actual residents of the City of Chicago as outlined in Section 2-152-050 of the City of Chicago Municipal Code. Proof of residency will be required.
