Email a Friend Save Save Apply Now Position Summary: To assume primary responsibility for the laboratory specimens submitted for referred testing. To coordinate, process, ship and monitor result status of mail-out testing as well as ensure proper charges are generated. Qualifications: ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Essential Functions:

+ Maintains the technical skills required to perform the necessary functions. Interacts with physicians to correctly determine testing orders for specialized testing.Researches new test parameters at the request of Pathologists. Physicians and all other customers.Solely responsible for all testing not performed at Methodist laboratory and referred to other laboratories. (Including, but not limited to ARUP, Mayo, Athena, OSF, Genzyme, State of Illinois, Prometheus, Hematologics, US Drug Testing, Blood Center of WI).Contributes to quality patient care by accurate receipt, processing, and referral of specimens for testing.Utilizes specialized knowledge to ensure that the appropriate specimen has been collected and processed properly prior to submission to referral lab for testing. Rejects specimens and interfaces with clients as necessary.Processes 24 hour urines to measure volume and test for pH to determine viability.Creates packing lists for all interfaced ARUP tests using appropriate work centers and testing sites; assures that all pertinent information is transmitted electronically.Solely responsible for training and for the competency of Clinical Laboratory Scientists to perform as back up in order to assure daily coverage of referred specimens.Performs duties as requested by Administrative Director, such as test counts, rejections, etc.

+ Responsible for ensuring that all specimens for referral testing are shipped in a manner which meets IATA, DOT and specific laboratory packaging and transportation guidelines.Organizes specimens according to storage (room temperature, refrigerated and frozen) using the ARUP packing system to ensure specimen integrity.Ensures all referred testing is transported according to individual referral lab specifications to assure accuracy and sample integrity.Selects correct reference lab for testing and then accurately completes requisitions for non-interfaced referral testing.Maintains specialized Hazmat Transportation certification and ensures that all medical specimens are packaged according to all IATA and DOT laws.Follows established safety policies during the processing, packing and transport of specimens.Advises other technical staff on appropriate shipping.Maintains adequate inventory of supplies required for the referral testing and monitors expiration dates.Uses appropriate Personal Protective Equipment as needed.

+ Responsible for communicating with internal customers (including physicians and other providers) throughout the organization as well as external customers.Uses superior skills and specialized technical job knowledge to initiate problem solving involving referred testing.Interacts with all levels of staff including nursing and physicians levels to provide them with information critical to the care of their patients.Assists with billing and test changes.Remains current with all test changes/updates and submits to LIS Manager in an appropriate and timely manner. Monitors quarterly ARUP Hot Line updates as well as immediate updates and assists LIS team in prioritizing these changes.Recommends new interfaced tests as volumes change. Initiates and completes all paperwork for the changes and submits to the LIS team and assists with prioritization.Functions as the key technical resource person for referral testing information including testing availability, performing laboratories, test ordering, specimen type, specimen processing as well as transportation requirements, turn around time, CPT coding and billing.Appropriately communicates updates to appropriate lab personnel and ensures the on line Test Directory is up-to-date.
