UIC College of Medicine is seeking a Phlebotomist for a Contract Location Appointment located at 845 W Wilson Ave, Chicago, IL with our Department of Medicine - Infectious Diseases team. This role will be required to draw blood from patients in our healthcare facility outreach clinics utilizing standard techniques and protocols and perform related record-keeping or data collection duties. Blood drawing may be fore purposes such as slide smears used to diagnose disease, blood typing, or collection of large amounts of blood for donation and other diagnostics.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Performs phlebotomy for UCCN outreach clinics; coordinates with physicians and nurses to ensure orders for labs are accurate and placed electronically; performs patient intake including some vitals when necessary; serves as the liaison between clinical staff and pathology, microbiology and receiving laboratories for internal and external labs.
Documents in EMR for every patients seen. Notes any issues with phlebotomy process, when necessary. Keeps accurate inventory of medical/phlebotomy supplies at clinics.
Participates in weekly case conferencing and other meetings to discuss patient progress or issues with blood draws. Participates in meetings regarding quality improvement of phlebotomy dept.

Minimum Qualifications Required:

High school diploma or equivalent.
One (1) year (12 months) of work experience as a phlebotomist within the last five years.

Preferred Qualifications:
Manual dexterity
Knowledge of phlebotomy techniques
Knowledge of aseptic techniques
Knowledge of correct handling of potentially infectious specimens
Knowledge of first aid techniques related to phlebotomy (such as applying vein pressure after performing venipunctures)
Knowledge of basic physiology
Proficiency in computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to operate equipment in area and follow direction on machinery.
Ability to read orders on EMR.
Ability to learn procedures for requesting or canceling tests.
