Duties and Responsibilities
Job Summary:
Under general direction, responsible to perform skilled maintenance, repairs and operation of equipment and systems in support of University central heating and cooling operations and environmental controls.
Duties & Responsibilities:
The Operating Engineer will be under the direct supervision of the Chief and Assistant Chief Engineers. Duties include, but not limited to operating or assisting in the operation of:
- all HVAC equipment
- motors, turbines, combustion engines, and pumps
- air compressors
- ice/refrigeration equipment
- chillers (centrifugal, screw & reciprocating)
- hot water boilers
- low pressure steam boiler
- elevators
- fire suppression systems
- ADA equipment
- building automation systems (BAS)
- may at times be needed to assist with snow removal
- other duties as assigned
Minimum Education and/or Work Experience
High School Diploma, Trade School or GED graduate and three years of related experience; member of Local 399 Operating Engineers Union or enrollment in said union within 90 days of accepting position as operating engineer. Licenses: City of Chicago Stationary Engineer License.
Qualifications
- Ability to read and interpret MEPFP as-built drawings
- Ability to use tools of the trade
- Ability to work in high and/or confined spaces
- Ability to carry materials to perform work functions
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
- Must supply their own hand tools
- Must be in good physical condition with the ability to assist with snow removal and other labor-intensive requests
- Must be able to work irregular hours if needed to perform job requirements
- Must be able to work successfully with other trades to perform job duties
Certificates/Credentials/Licenses
City of Chicago Stationary Engineer License
Must be in good standing with IUOE Local 399
Must have a valid driver's license in good standing, and maintain the license while employed as an operating engineer
Universal CFC card
Computer Skills
- proficient in the operation of building automation systems
- advanced user of Microsoft office software
- advanced user of computerized maintenance management software
