Job Description

The Tax Manager ensures that Lurie Children's is in compliance with all Federal and State tax requirements for non-profit companies. This includes the identification, investigation and filing regarding all tax matters.

Essential Job Functions:
Completes federal and state income tax returns, including all related analysis and support. Ensures all tax returns are accurately and filed timely.
Responsible for tax planning in preparation for future filings and project managing collection of data required to complete filings. Reconciles data collected to multiple sources and follows up on discrepancies.
Ensures use of efficient systems, process and controls for preparation of various forms and documentation including, but not limited to, Forms 990, 1065, 1099, 720 and 5500.
Manages data and tax filings related to real estate, sales, payroll, foreign bank accounts, Chicago amusement etc.
Responsible for audits of federal and state income tax and other filings. Communicates with IRS officials, tax counsel and tax consultants in situations where fines assessed, errors identified, or guidance is required.
Monitors transactions including private use, unrelated business income and miscellaneous non-salary compensation that could result in tax liabilities.
Serves as an in-house consultant providing guidance to Medical Center departments on tax and compliance matters.
Develop and maintain a high-level knowledge of the Medical Center's operations and tax implications.
Establish, develop and maintain relationships with Medical Center's tax consultants and other advisors, ensuring appropriate communication and sharing of required information amongst the working group.
Stays apprised of tax developments and drafts periodic tax updates for the Board of Directors and Senior Leadership.
Assists in training and education relating to tax matters.
Leads various projects and collaborates on cross-functional initiatives.
The authority to hire, separate, promote, demote, write and administer performance evaluations.
Other job functions as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance or related business area required. Master's Degree in Business Taxation preferred.
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) required.
Minimum of 6 years of public accounting tax experience required.
Previous tax experience with non-profit hospitals strongly preferred.
Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
Strong accounting, analytical, communication, project management and interpersonal skills required including attention to detail and demonstrated track record of reconciling data.
Ability to work independently and take ownership of tax filings and deadlines seeking input from other parts of the organization or outside resources as needed.
Must have a demonstrated hands-on, thorough approach and success in working in a team-based environment.
Must have excellent judgment, multi-tasking, and decision-making skills.
Demonstrated ability to communicate complex issues in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
Demonstrates confidence in own abilities even when working in unfamiliar areas.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively and congenially with employees at diverse levels.
Decisiveness and ability to exercise good judgment under pressure; collegiality and a sense of humor are valued.
