Reporting directly to the Supervisor, Electrical Maintenance-Substations, the Assistant Supervisor, Electrical Maintenance-Substations will assist in the supervision, coordination, and direction of the routine, daily activities of substation maintenance and capital project crews.
Ensure procedures for testing, maintenance and troubleshooting of substation switchgear, protective relays and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) are performed in an accurate, efficient and safe manner, as well as meet technical requirements in compliance with Division objectives, organization's policies and procedures, and all applicable regulatory codes.
Assists in the oversight of routine, day-to-day activities of all substation maintenance and capital project crews; support the supervisor in a variety of department and administrative functions.
Ensure substation employees are provided with necessary training, equipment and technical guidance. Under the direction of the Supervisor, Electrical Maintenance, ensure procedures for testing, maintenance and troubleshooting of substation switchgear and protective relays are performed in an accurate, efficient and safe manner, as well as meet technical requirements in compliance with Division objectives, organization's policies and procedures, and all applicable regulatory codes.
Serve as backup in the maintenance of the SCADA system, may include database, display modifications, and network administration; monitor substation and section alarms; dispatch crews and equipment in response to electrical-related issues.
Assist in the maintenance of established reports, logs, and computer generated maintenance programs needed to monitor substation-related equipment and inventory records.
Incumbents work under both inside and outside environmental conditions under prevailing conditions of heat, cold, rain, and snow. Preponderance of work performed on 3rd shift (10:30 PM to 7:30 AM).
Final salary will be determined in part by the qualifications of the selected candidate.
Metra is a railroad employer subject to the provisions of the Railroad Retirement Tax Act, not the Social Security Administration.


1. Must have an Associate of Science degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or Electrical Engineering or in lieu of the specified degree, any combination of education and experience may be substituted for the required degree that equals two (2) years in railroad electrical engineering or electrical utility industry experience in instrumentation and control administration.
2. In addition to #1, must have five (5) years of experience in railroad electrical engineering or electrical utility industry experience in instrumentation and control administration; experience with computerized maintenance management systems is desirable; ability to interpret electrical schematics.
3. Must have three (3) years experience as a lead electrician or team lead assigning tasks, providing guidance and training, monitoring performance, and conflict management.
4. Knowledge of National Electrical Codes, Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) regulations and safety precautions.
5. Familiar with the computer aided design (CAD) systems, maintenance of substation controls, communication, protective relay, SCADA systems, and equipment.
6. Proficient in the Microsoft Office applications.
7. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
8. Strong interpersonal, team building and motivational skills.
9. Demonstrate exceptional independent judgment and discretion.
10. Ability to:
work effectively and collaboratively with others.

11. Must be able to:
operate a vehicle and be willing to travel within Metra's 6-county region.
work 3rd Shift (10:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.).
Preferences:
Supervisory experience preferred.
